For the shoppers

Quirky independent shops. Impressive department stores. Famous flea markets. It’s not difficult to understand why so many people flock here for a shopping experience unlike any other. And it’s all due to the brilliant people who are expressing themselves through their shops, products and the rich community of our special places.

Something for everyone

The North Laines are the beating heart of Brighton. They represent the many sides of this diverse city and there are lots of treasures to discover around every corner. From trendy vegetarian cafes to brilliant bars, you’re sure to find something lovely to eat and drink to fuel up before some retail therapy. Stay at Corner Cottage to be right amongst the fun.

There’s a real bohemian vibe with vintage clothing stores, jewellery stalls and interesting independent shops stocked by local makers. For your cultural fix, there are enchanting art galleries, the Komedia Comedy Club and Brighton Dome. I love Enter Gallery in Bond Street, which is a well-stocked gallery of rare, limited edition prints by sought-after artists. Even if I can’t afford to take them all home, browsing is half the pleasure!

After a day well spent, our family favourite restaurant for a celebratory dinner is The Chilli Pickle, who serve Indian bistro dishes packed with flavour. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see their technicoloured awnings along the front of the restaurant – and inside is just as joyous.

Stand-up comedy may not have been possible in person during the lockdown – so Komedia offered some innovative live streaming comedy instead to keep us all entertained. I can’t wait to go back soon and do hope you’ll join me there!

A quirky paradise

No mention of the North Laines would be complete without a mention of Snooper’s Paradise. It’s such a truly unique place and a mecca for shopaholics! Enter through lines of stalls at the front and explore the emporium’s nooks and crannies. Over 90 different stallholders operate from this renowned flea market. If you’ve been craving a particular vintage piece, chances are you’ll either find it here or find someone who can lay hands on it for you. The people are all lovely and eager to share their expertise, and you’re bound to leave with laden arms.

Soothing shopping

In Royal Tunbridge Wells, The Pantiles has a long and varied history. It’s been the site of medical marvels and is where the ‘well’ in Tunbridge Wells originates. Head there today and you’ll find wonderful independent shops, still housed in the Georgian colonnade. Whether you’re thumbing through the clothes rails, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, there are few better places to while away a long afternoon if you ask me.

There are outdoor concerts all summer, as well as in winter when the stage is adorned with twinkling lights. Pair your visit with a stay at 3 Stable Mews for a perfect break.
