Northumberland is home to a diverse range of stone townhouses, farm buildings and quaint fisherman’s cottages, many of which are built using traditional local materials including limestone, sandstone and slate. Visiting Northumberland

Northumberland is a contrasting landscape that covers close to 2,000 square miles of rugged countryside. Within its borders you’ll discover everything from bracing walks and coastal breaks to dozens of welcoming towns and villages. While Newcastle upon Tyne officially became its own county in 1400, the city itself is no more than a mile’s drive away and is well worth a visit if you are keen to explore the wider area.

The history of Northumberland has given the county a rich culture, encompassing a wealth of historical sites and attractions to visit. Hadrian’s Wall, for example, is an impressive reminder of the Roman occupation of England that encompasses some 80 miles of fortified stone. The site is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular destination for holidaymakers. Several of our cottages are ideally situated for visiting the Hadrian’s wall area, so you may wish to consider these properties if you have a keen eye for history or enjoy scenic local walks.

Northumberland is also dotted with an unusual concentration of castles from throughout the ages, with Alnwick and Bamburgh representing particularly popular examples with accommodation nearby.

Coastal breaks are a popular choice for UK holidaymakers and with 30 miles of impressive beaches, Northumberland certainly has a lot to recommend it in this respect. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this collection of islands, hidden coves and golden sands is perfect for both relaxing in the sun or taking the plunge with an afternoon of water sports. Many of Northumberland’s beaches will welcome dogs throughout the year, but there are some areas where rules do apply, so be sure to read our guide when planning your visit.
