Dog Friendly Lake District Cottages

With their wide-open spaces, stunning fells and sparkling lakes, Cumbria and the Lake District National Park are a dog’s paradise, with endless opportunities for walkies!

Take Grizedale Forest, for example. Here you’ll find an array of walking trails to suit everyone from the seasoned fell walker to the Sunday afternoon ambler. There’s an abundance of wildlife to spot, gorgeous scenery and even sculptures to ponder over. Even the café is dog friendly.

Quite a few of the attractions in this part of the world will also welcome your dog. You can take your four-legged friend to explore the fascinating history of Carlisle Castle or the splendours of Hutton-in-the-Forest, the grounds of now-ruined Furness Abbey, and even the Lakeland Motor Museum!

And if you’re heading out onto the water to get up close to the world-famous lakes, your pooch can travel for free on Windermere Lake Cruises or for a small charge on the Ullswater ‘Steamers’

Discover your next dog friendly getaway in the Lakes

We have almost 60 Lake District cottages that are waiting to welcome you and your dog, and many offer doggy treats on arrival.

For canine luxury on a grand scale, Waternook, on the banks of Ullswater, has to be seen to be believed. This 5* platinum property sleeps up to 12 and welcomes up to two pets. They are treated to their own designated doggy space, complete with underfloor heating and mountain views. There are endless walks and acres of private grounds to explore too.

With a name like Greyhound Cottage, you’d expect this Lake District cottage to be dog friendly! In fact, up to five dogs can stay here free of charge. While there’s no outside area, the cottage is directly opposite the green banks of the River Kent, where your dog can happily roam.

Hacket Forge is an ancient forge that would have been known to the Wordsworths and Beatrix Potter. Recently renovated to a high standard, the cottage sleeps up to six and welcomes up to two dogs. The Forge overlooks the River Brathay and its gentle cascades and pools are often deep enough for swimming, or at least a paddle. Doggy heaven indeed.

Set amidst stunning countryside, and once owned by Wordsworth’s cousin, Fell View Po House (sleeps four) and The Chapel Po House (sleeps two) welcome up to three dogs apiece. There are treats for your dog/s, and, with stables on-site, you can even bring your horse or pony! Both properties have enclosed gardens and there are stunning walks from the door. The dog friendly beach of Silecroft is just over a mile away.
