Cottages in Ambleside

Ambleside is in the heart of the Lake District and is close to popular areas such as Grasmere, Clappersgate, Windermere and Keswick, as well being a bustling and vibrant town. Our holiday cottages in Ambleside encapsulate the rural charm of this part of the Lake District and are the perfect place to rest your head in between days filled with walking, eating well and experiencing new things. As walking is undeniably one of the biggest draws of this region, we understand that many of our customers want to bring along their canine companions on their Lakeland holiday. It is for this reason that we have an extensive portfolio of rental properties in Ambleside that are pet-friendly.

Our local team have highlighted a range of our holiday cottages that they think you - and your furry friends - will love. If you’re seeking a truly remote holiday, a so-called ‘digital detox’ perhaps, then have a look at our cottage Ellers Close. This quaint farmhouse was built in 1850 and still retains all its historical charm, including the fact that it doesn’t have any phone signal! The cottage has three bedrooms and sleeps up to four guests and two pets, so may be perfect for a family, or a group of friends with multiple pets.

Another property which may catch your eye is Courtyard Hideaway Cottage. This self-catering cottage is located at the bottom of Loughrigg Fell, a well-known gentle walking spot and perfect place to look out across Grasmere, where you can spot William Wordworth’s home Dove Cottage. Courtyard sleeps two guests and one pet, so is a brilliant choice for couples. If you are in a larger group, check out 4 Swiss Villas, which sleeps six guests and one pet, making it the perfect holiday home for a group of hikers or larger family.

Visiting Ambleside

There are plenty of dog-friendly activities to partake in during your time in Ambleside. Starting with the outside world, Stock Ghyll Beck is a short walk from Ambleside town and is revered by locals as the best spot to see the 70-foot waterfall, Stock Ghyll Force, a truly spectacular sight. For those seeking a more challenging walk (somewhere between climbing Old Man Coniston, and a gentle ramble across the Lakeland hills), try Wansfell. This medium size mountain boasts breath-taking views of Ambleside and Windermere.

If you don’t want to take your dog on a strenuous walk, but still want to get out in the fresh air with them, book onto the dog-friendly Windermere River cruise. Not only are dogs allowed on the boat, but they also travel for free and get their very own ticket to mark the occasion. Dogs are also allowed on the premises of local tourist attractions such as Beatrix Potter’s house at Hill Top and Ambleside’s Roman Fort - both are perfect for history and literature lovers, as well as having plenty of outdoor space for dogs to roam freely.

Ambleside’s array of shops, pubs and restaurants are also known for being animal friendly. Chesters by the river is a cafe, restaurant and bakery that offers a wide selection of food that caters to a range of dietary requirements and opens its doors happily to dogs. Zeffirellis is also one of Ambleside’s most iconic restaurants and is also home to a cinema and hosts live jazz music events, which it has been doing for over 40 years. Despite not being open to dogs, Zeffirellis has something for everyone in the family, from kid-friendly films to romantic evening dining for couples.
