Penshurst Apple Cake

This delicious apple cake is a Penshurst speciality, made by using apples grown in the estate orchard, it was first enjoyed by the Sidney family, who have occupied Penshurst Place since the 16th Century - but you can use your own home grown apples or whatever variety you have to hand. Ingredients: Serves 6 450g mixed dried fruit, 675g cooking apples, 250ml strained tea, 350g sugar, 350g soft margarine, pinch of salt, 450g self-raising flour, 2x5ml mixed spice, 4 beaten eggs, 8 Wheetabix crumbled

Walk from Shipbourne to Ightham Mote

Think Farmers Market, think a walk through the countryside to Ightham Mote for a refreshing cup of coffee, think lunch at The Chaser Inn - if this sounds good to you, then read on! The farmers market is set up in the grounds of St Giles church at Shipbourne and runs from 9.30am to 11am on Thursday mornings. The produce is fantastic and all their wares are set out in front of the lovely old church. If you continue through the churchyard and follow the yellow markers it will take you on a circular route via the Fairlawne Estate to the National Trust property Ightham Mote.

Lake District Cottages - Elterwater Village

Nestled in the mouth of Great Langdale valley, Elterwater village takes it’s name from Elter Water (Lake of Swans) which lies 1/2 a mile to the south. For several hundred years the main industries in the village have been quarrying and farming, many of the houses and Elterwater Cottages in the centre of the village were originally built as housing for the quarry workers and for the Victorian gunpowder works located on the site where Langdale Estate & spa now stand.Elterwater quarry is still a working quarry, now owned by Burlington Stone and producing the highly prized Elterwater slate

Drizzle Cake Isn't Just for Lemons

Being a keen baker I’ve recently started to expand my repertoire into adaptations of other peoples recipes. As baking is more science & precision than other cookery forms you can’t deviate too much without drastic changes in results. I’m a great fan of The Hairy Bikers cookbooks, as after extensive usage for all sorts of meals they’ve never let me down (are you listening Gary Rhodes & Jamie Oliver!). Having recently used their Lemon Drizzle Cake recipe with a great response from family & friends I thought I may try the same recipe using Oranges instead.
