Location
Askrigg
The small Wensleydale village of Askrigg is an idyllic location to enjoy a self-catering break. The sights of the Yorkshire Dales National Park surround you, with the bustling market towns of Hawes, Leyburn and Northallerton being just a short drive away where you'll find lovely independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The village is famous for being the setting of fictional Darrowby in tv's All Creatures Great and Small, though in the 18th century was hive of industry when it became a centre for the textiles and knitting trade. It is also thought that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Askrigg's Nappa Hall before being moved further down the dale to Castle Bolton. Today in the village you'll find three pubs, The Crown Inn (which dates back to 1850), The White Rose Hotel and the Kings Arms. The village also is home to some great tea rooms such as The Bakewell Cafe and The Corn Mill Tea Room (Bainbridge), a village bakery with a delicatessen, a village store and newsagents. In nearby Leyburn, you will find the Wensleydale Brewery & shop, which runs open days.
