Reviews

Absolutely lovely little cottage. Very well equipped, all the kitchen utensils and equipment you could ask for. Beds are comfortable, spacious rooms. Lovely furniture throughout. Location very good, just a 10 minute walk to the beach and centre of the town. Would definitely stay here again next time we come to Whitby. Nice finishing touches, well stocked hamper and flowers. You don’t need to bring anything, apart from food, and shampoo etc, everything else is provided. Thank you we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Mrs B,

Beautiful property, great loc, easy walk into Whitby.

Mr G,

The location is good , the cottage has 5*amenities the road noise may be a problem depending on length of stay , would stay again , may pack ear plugs depending what kind of sleeper you are, windows open etc ,,

Mrs T,

Lovely clean and comfortable cottage - well equipped - very short walking distance to town centre. We would be very happy to stay again, The welcoming hamper on arrival was the best we have had.

Mr S,

Excellent property, really enjoyed our stay. Good location for the town and surrounding area. Welcome hamper was much appreciated.

Mr G,

We spent a wonderful few days at the gatehouse. The accommodation was well appointed and spotlessly clean. There was also a well stocked welcome hamper on arrival! I would definitely recommend this property and will look at re-booking this should we return to Whitby in the future

Mr R,

Great holiday home, really enjoyed our stay.

Mr W,

Within easy walking distance to whitby. But on a very busy and noisy road junction. Has an outside patio area but was right on the road side. Inside is comfortable. Hamper was a nice touch.

Mrs B,

Beautiful cottage but the traffic noise from 6.30am until late evening spoilt our stay

Ms B,

Had a wonderful 3 night stay at The Gatehouse. The location is great for Whitby, we parked the car up on arrival and walked everywhere. It is quite close to a main road/traffic lights but there is minimal traffic noise once inside the property and does not disturb sleep. The outdoor space isn't really useable for outdoor relaxing or dining al fresco but didn't affect our stay or enjoyment of the property. Would definitely recommend and also return to on a future visit. Thank you

Mrs W,

Stunning property, loved it. Had everything you needed. Nice to have a lovely welcome hamper. Also things like loo roll, washing up liquid etc so you don’t have to go straight to supermarket on arrival.

Mrs M,

Had a fabulous week in Whitby. The property is outstanding with the attention to detail second to none. Great location too. Many thanks.

Mr S,

We found The Gate House in Whitby a luxury holiday home, very well equipped, in fact everything thought of. We did worry though about spilling hot drinks while on the velvet sofas, which were very comfortable. We were also aware how easily the beautiful tiled floors would have chipped if we’d have dropped anything. Although we found the cottage suitable for us, it would not suit older people with mobility issues or disabled people. One bedroom is downstairs but the only bathroom is upstairs, to use the shower the roll top bathtub is quite high to climb into. Downstairs there is a separate toilet and small basin. The furnishings in the cottage were very tasteful and expensive, lovely paintings on the walls, the beds very, very comfortable, good hotel style bed linen. The kitchen was well fitted, dishwasher and washing machine ,plus an American fridge freeezer. 3 flat screen TVs, books and games to keep guests amused. Plenty of parking. There is a main road running by the cottage but even with the upstairs bedroom windows open it wasn’t noisy at night.

Mr H,

Luxury accommodation with parking. Good location for walking into town and for main road access for visiting other areas.

Mr C,

We stayed at this property last year and were looking forward to a return visit. However, after a 5 hour drive and looking forward to a nice cup of tea we were disappointed that the welcome pack this year consisted of a few bags of broken pieces of chocolate. when last year it was a jar of Kenco coffee, a box of teabags and a nice bottle of wine. We did not expect to have to go and find a supermarket straight away to purchase these basics that were supplied last year. Also, there were no slip-on slippers as there were last year. The TV in the lounge still does not work properly and constantly loses the picture. This is being blamed on a broken transmitter which I find strange as the TV's in the other rooms work fine. There was mould around the bathroom shower screen and black marks behind the taps. The less said about the plastic bath mat the better, it looks disgusting. All in all, this is very sad as it was excellent last year. We also noticed that other visitors sang the praises of the welcome pack so perhaps it was just us, but it felt like penny-pinching, and as I have said above, I could have done without having to drive to a supermarket after a 5-hour drive to the cottage. Although generally well equipped in other ways, I would no longer class this cottage as 5-star.

Mr J,

Highly recommend. Booked for son's 21st birthday. All 4 of us had a great time. Everything provided and first class. Thank you.

Mr M,

Location

Whitby
Whitby is a popular choice for visitors all year round. It is well known for its long sandy beach and delicious seafood. The river Esk flows through the town to the sea and cottages are perched on the hills on each side, with cobbled streets and historic yards providing a maze of places to explore. The town has a fantastic mix of modern shops and services, traditional stores and boutique shops. Whitby jet continues to be made into beautiful jewellery and sold in a number of shops.  There are plenty of excellent restaurants which serve local fish and seafood, as well as a wonderful choice of cafes and tearooms.

The ruins of Whitby Abbey stand dominantly on the clifftop and can be reached by climbing the 199 steps from the old town. The Abbey is said to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker's novel Count Dracula, and its gothic splendour is the perfect place from which to take in some truly stunning views over the town, harbour and coastline. Whitby harbour is steeped in history and visitors can see where British explorer Captain James Cook first worked as an apprentice before setting sail and discovering Australia. A statue of this great explorer stands proudly above the town, along with some huge whalebones, a sign of the town's maritime history. The harbour is a buzz of activity and you can enjoy early mornings watching the fishing boats come ashore before getting first choice of their catch of the day.

There's always something happening throughout the town, with festivals and fairs are held throughout the year. These include Whitby Folk Week and the Whitby Regatta, and there are two popular Goth festivals each year.
