Description

Mermaids is a charming stone-built smokery cottage, offering a great bolthole in the heart of Seahouses historic fishing village. Nestled in a communal courtyard and just a short stroll to the harbour, shops and cafes. Mermaids is an ideal base for families and friends looking for a seaside holiday in beautiful Northumberland. There is plenty to see and do in Seahouses including boat trips to the Farne Islands where you can see a large colony of grey seals as well as an abundance of seabirds, such as the puffins during nesting season. Take the sunset cruise and you may be lucky enough to be followed by the local pod of playful bottlenose dolphins, or see the beautiful Northern Lights which make an occasional appearance along the coastline.  Along the Northumbrian Heritage Coastline, some incredible sights include Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castle, and Holy Island with fabulous beaches and places to explore.

Reviews

Lovely cottage had everything we needed, great location and parking space.

Mrs S,

Comfortable cottage in great location in Seahouses, close to all shops and amenities, with excellent walking routes and beaches close by, and an easy drive to Banbury and Beadnell. Available private parking space was a bonus and avoided any parking issues in Seahouses.

Mr R,

lovely little cottage in a wonderful location. close to the harbor and beach.

Mr R,

This property far exceeded our expectations. Really clean on arrival and a book with useful information on the surrounding area and also for the property was a nice touch...along with some biscuits and tea/coffee/milk. As we had been delayed in traffic this was particularly welcome. Property is superbly located for all Seahouses has to offer...even if I did hyperventilate every time I had to manoeuvre the car through the narrow streets! We had a brilliant holiday and looking to book again in Spring next year.

Miss M,

Seahouses is a great location to go north or south on the coastline and cottage had everything we needed.

Mrs Jenny J,

Lovely location and very clean. However, we could not open the front door with the key provided and this was not resolved during our stay. Towels were small and poor quality and we had to buy some mugs as the ones provided were very small! Minor niggles though

Mrs Jill R,

Although cottage location is very good for sea and shops etc it is on a rough narrow street with many cars parked so is not always easy to navigate. The equipment generally very good apart from not having a good large frypan. There are two but not very nice. A tablespoon would be handy too. The comfort and quality is to a fairly high standard but the windows at the front of the property do not open, so no fresh air to the bedrooms. If the weather had been hot it would have been very uncomfortable. Mattresses not that comfortable but good once I had laid the quilts under the bottom sheets. I always take my own blankets as we are too hot under duvets. Very nice cottage overall though. I only gave a 3 for returning as we think that we will not be going self catering any more.

Mrs Brenda W,

Location

Seahouses

This charming fishing village on the Northumberland coast is a popular seaside holiday resort and a must for wildlife and nature lovers. Visitors can take boat trips from here around the Farne Islands and spot 150,000 seabirds in their breeding space, an impressive site alongside the grey seals that inhabit the islands. Kids will love Seahouses too. They can spend days playing crazy golf, building sandcastles on the beach, rock pooling, horse riding on the sands or cycling along the coastal pathways.

The Fisherman’s Kitchen is an interesting afternoon out to appreciate historic fishing memorabilia and admire the local catch of the day. No visit is complete without checking out Swallowfish who have one of the original smokehouses and have operated on the site since 1843. Their fine offerings of smoked produce are accompanied by a range of fresh seasonal fish from the North Sea.
