Description

Raleigh’s is a beautifully tranquil, rural retreat, set in the heart of the delightful Cerne Abbas village. Raleigh's is an enchanting and quintessential cottage - the most perfect base for accessibility to the countryside as well as the coast.

Built in 1580, it once hosted a visit from Sir Walter Raleigh! Fully modernised and sleeping 6 comfortably it is in the beautiful and historic village of Cerne Abbas. This welcoming home offers couples and families a cosy base for exploring the surrounding countryside with the award-winning Jurassic Coast a short drive away. Within a short stroll are three excellent village pubs, shop and tearoom. The famous Cerne Giant is within easy walking distance from the house and well worth a visit.

Raleigh’s has all the comforts of home and welcomes you from the moment you enter the cottage. The kitchen at the rear has an electric Aga, country kitchen table and chairs and doors onto a courtyard garden. The large sitting room has almost too many features to mention, from its large Inglenook fireplace with contemporary wood burning stove to the ceiling beams and oak window shutters. This space offers a comfortable relaxing spot for reading - a large library of books are provided - listening to music, catching up with loved ones and whiling away the evening as you watch the embers fade in the log burning stove. The garden is secure and enclosed with an alfresco eating space and Pizza Oven/BBQ. Also, on the ground floor there is a walk in shower room with WC and basin.

The features continue as you rise to the first floor on the fantastically uneven stairs to the panelled landing where you can retreat to listen to music, watch TV or spend some time alone and unwind. To the front is the 1st of the 3 bedrooms. The 3rd room is a double with ample hanging space, double bed and views onto the village street outside. The 2nd bedroom across the landing again is a double with feature fireplace (not in use), leaded window to the front and plenty of storage space. To the back of the cottage is the family bathroom which is well appointed and is next to the master bedroom with super-king size bedroom, ample storage space and overlooks the courtyard.

You really are in the heart of the village at Raleighs, you have the very best of the countryside and coast so very close. Enjoy exploring the towns of Dorchester, Sherborne and Bridport and places of interest like Maiden Castle, Nothe Fort and Portland Bill. With so many places to discover locally you will find something to do come rain or shine!

Reviews

We cut short our break because of concerns over the safety of the property, overloaded electrical sockets and an unacceptable means of escape

Mr C,

We felt so at home at the cottage, the exterior and interior are beautiful. The cottage is full of such interesting objects and is really well equipped, with easy instructions to follow in the book left for guests. The location is gorgeous and, during our stay, very peaceful, but it is so easy to reach places to explore. Sitting by the fire in the evening was a real treat and the house and it's history are wonderful to enjoy.

Mrs H,

Thank you so much for a very special stay. We loved every minute. Your house is wonderful - so many treasures. Thank you for your generosity.

Past Customer,

We enjoyed a wonderful week at Raleigh’s and were so sorry that we forgot to write in the visitors’ book. A delightful home away from home: Picturesque, charming, quirky and cosy. The perfect village was a great spot for the local shop, pub food and dog walks. The quaint house an enchanting place to return to after each day’s activity, whether it be visiting the towns or Dorchester (Maiden Castle is a must see), Sherborne and it’s castle, Weymouth and it’s beach, or the Hardy landscapes and Lulworth Cove and Durdle door. The dogs particularly enjoyed the hilly giant walk and the Puddletown Forest with its Roman road. Raleigh’s had a lovely wooden stove to warm us, a modern Aga to cook our casseroles and lovely hot showers and dreamily comfortable beds. We are looking forward to returning and would highly recommend.

Mrs H,

Wonderful house with masses of character in a really lovely village - that includes The Giant pub with old fashioned skittle alley!. Perfect kitchen dining area for preparing and sharing, and so many seating areas for numerous board games etc. Even managed to sit out in the charming garden until it got dark, playing Catan! All in all a really special place - up there with the best Landmark Trust properties.

Mr M,

Very well equipped. Good village position. Had a fab four days. Good to have lovely soft towels and good bed linen. Lucky enough to have good weather and sit in the garden. Very unique house, Thank you for the hamper.

Past Customer,

We had a lovely week-long family holiday. The cottage was full of character and the village was beautiful.

Mr B,

A lovely stay in a very unique property. Would love to stay again.

Past Customer,

Despite dire weather forecasts we were out everyday. A lovely family holiday , adults and baby

Past Customer,

Thank you for letting us enjoy your lovely home. We loved spending time by the fire and in the garden. Lovely town and scenic views - would love to stay again.

Past Customer,

The cottage was full of excess furniture and trinkets/photos on surfaces. In the kitchen there was no cupboard or shelf to store food as all the unlocked cupboards were totally full. The extractor fan in the shower did not work and the drain needed clearing (needed a screwdriver to lift the cover which we hadn’t got) so the floor flooded. There was no airer or line to dry clothes and the washer dryer was really poor at drying. The high chair and cot provided for the baby were excellent. The stairs are lovely to look at but a challenge to climb as the tread heights not only varied but sloped. We will go back to Cerne Abbas as the village is lovely but we will book a different cottage.

Rev Janet M,

A truly unique property perfectly located in the beautiful village of Cerne Abbas. The Ralieghs is very comfortable, clean and well equipped we also loved the various sitting areas. The property also benefits from having a bathroom and shower room both with toilets. Which was really appreciated. Ralieghs is very well located to visit the counties of Dorset and Somerset. Lots of lovely walks in the area and a bus service. The property is easily accessible by road. Dorchester and Sherborne are both just a few miles away. The village itself has the “giant” plus lots of other amenities should you wish to stay local. The three friendly village pubs all have there own charms and serve good food and ales. We had a very relaxing week and would happily stay at Ralieghs again in the future.

Mr R,

Raleigh's was the most amazing property, full of history & character, beautiful The location was perfect. Cerne Abbas is so lovely all year round

Past Customer,

Raleigh cottage is a fairly unique property in a wonderful location. It was the perfect place for our family get together and celebration. I had a few enquires ahead of our visit and they were dealt with very quickly and efficiently.

Mrs Josephine D,

What a wonderful treat to have the opportunity to stay in your beautiful house. We would love to stay again. Thank you for your gifts.

Past Customer,

Your company would not refund me my money when our holiday got cancelled in 2020. We have had problems with in and out bookings since. The original place we booked was then no longer affordable and they did not honour our original booking. I originally went with this company to support a local business but after my experience and refusal of a refund for a trip that got cancelled by all but us, I shall continue from now on with using airbnb. In regards to the cottage, they are very strict! Even instructed us to take all the sheets off the bed and put them and towels in separated bags!! This is not part of the deal when hiring a cottage and when paying cleaning fees. Also says pets allowed but was told to keep our cats in a crate!

Miss Mikaela K,

What a lovely cottage you have. We were amazed at your collection of cookware in the well-equipped kitchen. We liked the cute upstairs, it was like being in a boat galley. The beds were great and gave us good nights of sleep. Unfortunately, we didn't get to enjoy your lovely garden because of the rain, Thank you for the welcome hamper, special little touches like that puts a smile on our faces the minute we stepped into your cottage. Hope to return one day. Thank you.

Previous Customer,

Thank you so much for a wonderful week, beginning with the superb welcome hamper, a very thoughtful touch. We have had so much fun exploring Thomas Hardy country, eating in fantastic hostelries, and coming "home" to relax in your cosy cottage filled with so many personal touches. We found Cerne Abbas itself to be the friendliest village with a remarkable history. The warm pasty from the excellent village store is delicious!
