Description
The Smithy is an intriguing property with a rich history and abundance of charm in the heart of picturesque Lynton. This unique home has been considerately restored to create an eye-catching holiday retreat with many of the original features intact. The substantial open plan lounge, diner, kitchen has the exposed original oak beams and high vaulted ceiling as a reminder of the days of the old forge complemented by contemporary decor. An attractive fireplace with wood burner forms a focal point surrounded by comfy sofas and a roomy dining area sits alongside the well equipped kitchen. There is a minstrel's gallery at the top of the wide wooden stairs, where the iron used to be stored, which has been turned into a unique king size bedroom. A second double room and a single room can also be reached off the landing along with a family bathroom.
Historically, the forge was worked by Bill Prideaux, who was still providing a service at the age of 89, claiming to be the oldest blacksmith in the country. The village of Lynton is in an area known as England’s Little Switzerland. This Victorian village has a lovely selection of shops, tea-rooms and cafes and boasts The Lyn and Exmoor Museum, which is housed in St Vincent’s Cottage. It has some interesting exhibitions of Exmoor life, including information about the local lifeboat and the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway. Both Lynton and Lynmouth owe a great deal to Sir George Newnes, who in 1887 along with Thomas Hewitt, began to lay a 900 foot twin track up the steep gradient between the two villages. The unique water operated funicular cliff railway was opened in 1890 and, apart from needing new track in 1908, operates now as it always has. Head inland for the wonders of Exmoor National Park or west to the fascinating town of Ilfracombe
