Blue Flag Beaches

Visits to the seaside bring back happy memories for so many of us. Reminiscing about family holidays - playing on the beach, paddling, rock-pooling, building sandcastles and not to mention the mouth-watering ice creams!

We are so lucky here in this corner of the country to have so many beaches to choose from – from sandy bays and sand dunes to pebbly beaches and secluded bays.  This year, no less than ten Kent beaches have won the internationally recognised Blue Flag award, which means visitors can be sure these are clean, safe beaches with great facilities and water quality.  Beaches who have won the award include Botany Bay, Stone Bay, Minnis Bay, Tankerton and Margate Main Sands.  Twenty-one beaches in Kent have also received the Seaside Award, which is Keep Britain Tidy’s own award for the beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities.

Botany Bay boasts a quiet expanse of sand, smugglers caves and chalk clifftops and Stone Bay is just perfect for rock pooling in low tide (nearby Joss Bay is known as the best surfing beach in Thanet).  Minnis Bay is secluded and great for families with plenty of facilities and things to do including swimming, water sports and a children’s area.  From Herne Bay, Whitstable and Deal to the pretty Victorian seaside resorts of Broadstairs and Hythe, these are seaside favourites with good reason.  Bags of history can also be seen on the Kent coast in the many castles and towers, whilst the ancient Saxon Shore Way walk runs from Gravesend to Hastings.

In Sussex from Winchelsea beach, Camber Sands, Hastings St Leonards to Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne, there are sandy beaches and dunes to enjoy and pebbly beaches to explore.  The Blue Flag has been awarded to West Wittering, Marina St Leonards, Hove Lawns and Brighton Central, while the Seaside Award has been given to many Sussex beaches too.  There is also culture in abundance for you to enjoy when you holiday near the Sussex coast - in the many art galleries and museums and lots of wonderful vintage shopping opportunities.  Add traditional seaside activities and fare and a huge choice of family days out and there is something to keep everyone happy.

Dramatic and iconic coastlines, sandy and shingle beaches, secluded bays and wonderful cliff top walks await you when you holiday on the Kent or Sussex coast, and with so much to see and do, we are certain that when you return from your holiday you will want to book again for next year!
