Cottages in Orford

An attractive fishing village in Suffolk, Orford is a lovely holiday destination due to its picturesque surroundings, local attractions and coastal walks. We have a large selection of holiday cottages in Orford for you to choose from, including a collection of dog-friendly holiday homes, luxury accommodation and properties with unrivalled coast and country views.

Orford’s most famous landmark is Orford Ness, a shingle spit that runs down the coast to Aldeburgh and dedicated nature reserve. A great place for a walk, the reserve also has a very unusual and fascinating historic landmark, a former Automatic Weapons Research Establishment. One of the only test lab in the UK, the AWRE was built in the 1950s and operated right up until 1971, but today it remains open to the public and offers a truly unique into Britain’s military past.

Orford beach is just a mile from the centre of Orford and is a lovely walking spot, but it should be noted that, as it is a nature reserve, dogs are not permitted on Orford Ness, but Aldeburgh beach allows dogs onshore between October and April and Thorpeness beach nearby permits dogs all year round. Orford Castle is another local landmark that is well worth a visit. The castle remains surprisingly intact and you can even walk up the turrets and take in some pretty spectacular views of Orford Ness. Another interesting Orford building is St Bartholemew’s Church, a Grade I listed fourteenth century church renowned for its impeccable acoustics that make it a wonderful live music venue.

There are several fantastic local bars, shops and restaurants in Orford that offer an excellent selection of local food and drink. Pinney’s of Orford for example, is famed for its traditionally smoked salmon. Pinney’s owns ‘The Butley Orford Oysterage’ restaurant, as well as a local shop on the Orford quay and provides both with a fantastic selection of smoked fish. Orford’s prime location also means you’re in a position to explore more of Suffolk’s towns and villages, including Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and Snape.
