Coastal Yorkshire

The Yorkshire Coast: Local Favourites

The Yorkshire coast is East Yorkshire’s defining feature. From rugged moorland behind, to golden sandy beaches on the seafront, the Yorkshire coast is home to some of Britain’s best coastal spots. Our coastal cottages are located in popular resort towns like Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington and quieter seaside villages such as Humanby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes. The main thing to note about the Yorkshire coast is that it is very well connected, both as a coastline and to inland Yorkshire, via car, bus and rail, so it is very easy to get to these spots no matter where you are staying! We turned to our local team to give us their favourite coastal spots in God’s Own Country, so without further ado, here they are!

Staithes coast, with cottages dotted before a large cliffside1

Staithes

Described by our local team as “a small fishing village with a traditional East coast feel”, Staithes is the very definition of quaint seaside village. With cobbled streets lined with local shops, including Betsy and Bo’s Traditional Sweet Shop and Cobbles Ice Cream parlour, Staithes maintains a sense of antiquated charm. The beach as Staithes is part of the Jurassic Coast, meaning that it is a great spot for enthusiastic geologists to try and collect some fossils. The beach is also dog-friendly and deemed very safe for youngsters - a great destination all round!

Robin Hood’s Bay

Just a short drive out of Whitby lies the ever wonderful hidden gem of Robin Hood’s Bay. This tiny town is also part of the Jurassic Coast and even has a local museum and shop selling fossils and geological books where you can delve deep into the natural history of this special part of the Yorkshire coast. Other shopping highlights in Robin Hood’s Bay include Berties of Bay, a boutique selling traditional gansey fisherman’s jumpers and Higgledy Pig, where you can pick up a little Yorkshire souvenir. Aside from the beach, a great way to spend some time in Robin Hood’s Bay is by walking the mosaic path, which commemorates local organisations and boasts lovely views of moored boats, the seascape and even seals if you’re really lucky!

Sandsend3

Sandsend

Another little tucked-away coastal spot is Sandsend, again just a short drive from Whitby and en route to Staithes, if you fancy doing both in a day. Often much quieter than neighbouring Whitby, Sandsend beach is a great spot for families, particularly during low tide when the rockpools are exposed. Head to Wild Hart for a little treat in the form of homeware, candles and vintage delights. Our local team also assures us that the food at The Fish Cottage and The Hart Inn is delicious, should you get peckish during your visit!

Busy long stretch of sand in Scarborough on a summers day4

Scarborough

Scarborough is a proper seaside resort town. South Bay Beach is situated between the Scarborough Spa and West Pier and is a lovely sandy beach that catches the sun and is perfect for a day out with the family building sandcastles and paddling. There are plenty of attractions in Scarborough to keep you entertained, from rides and arcades, to an abundance of fish and chip shops, pubs and restaurants. Peasholm Park and Scarborough Castle are also always a hit with people of all ages and a great alternative to the beach.
