Ravenscar cottages
Far-reaching views across Robin Hood’s Bay, cliff-top walks, rocky coves and heritage sites make Ravenscar an idyllic location for a cottage holiday on the Yorkshire coast. Make the National Trust Visitor Centre the starting point for your stay here. Two historical highlights are within a half-mile walk: to the north are the remains of the famous Peak Alum Works – once an important part of England’s fabric dyeing industry – and to the south is Ravenscar WW2 radar station. The Victorians once envisaged the village as an upmarket rival to Scarborough and Whitby. The resort was never completed, however, and Ravenscar remains a haven of peace where pretty cottages, a parish church and tearooms are surrounded by a patchwork of dry-stone walls and pastures.
It's a strenuous walk down to Ravenscar Beach, but the reward is a stretch of sand and rock pools that’s home to a huge colony of seals – watch them bobbing in the sea or sleeping in the sun. When tides allow, it’s a 3-mile walk north to the beautiful sands and cobbled streets of Robin Hood’s Bay. Further on, there’s bustling Whitby – once home to explorer and voyager Captain James Cook – and the traditional fishing village of Staithes. Head south instead and Scarborough offers seaside fun for all the family. If you’re a keen walker or cyclist, the traffic-free Cinder Track links Scarborough to Whitby; along with the Cleveland Way National Trail and the Lyke Wake Walk, it passes through Ravenscar. Choose one of our Ravenscar holiday cottages and start planning your Yorkshire coast escape.
