Visiting Matlock and the Southern Peak District

Owing to their picturesque location at the edge of the Peak District National Park, Matlock and the surrounding area provide the ideal destination for a truly breathtaking family holiday.

Matlock sits astride the River Derwent, which also plays host to several smaller villages dotted along the valley hillside. These have long been popular destinations for holidaymakers, with plenty of little cottages, secret walkways and welcoming communities. Be sure to pay a visit to Youlgreave with its village shops, Saxon church and three great local pubs. The George Hotel is a great spot for a bite to eat, pint of ale or even take away fish and chips.

Situated just south of Matlock lies the spectacular local beauty spot known as “Little Switzerland” and the village of Matlock Bath. Here you will discover an active riverside promenade, Heights of Abraham cable cars and Gulliver’s Kingdom children’s theme park - an ideal destination for keeping little ones amused.

The village of Cromford rests just a few miles from Matlock and is truly unique in that it combines a strong industrial heritage with glorious natural beauty. The village originally developed around Sir Richard Arkwright’s famous mills and today features some fantastic shops, restaurants and inviting pubs. Arkwright’s Cromford Mill has been opened to the public and is home to a dedicated visitor centre with shops and its own cafe for a fascinating day out.

The Southern Peak District is truly home to an eclectic selection of villages and local beauty spots. Honorable mentions should go out to the villages of Wirksworth, Ashbourne and Belper, which all offer a one-of-a-kind experience for you to discover and explore.
