Surrounded by ancient pine forest and with the mighty Munro of Schiehallion to the east, Loch Rannoch Highland Club spreads across 250 acres of hillside, its holiday lodges overlooking one of Scotland's most beautiful lochs. A neighbouring bar and restaurant elevate the sense of luxury, while the surrounding area offers endless opportunities for water sports, walking, cycling, and wildlife watching – red squirrels, pine marten, golden eagles, osprey, red deer and otters can all be seen. Less than half a mile away, Kinloch Rannoch is a thriving village once favoured by wealthy Victorians who were drawn to its natural beauty and clean air. Head west to Rannoch Station (16 miles) and take the train to Mallaig on the West Highland Way. Take the road east, instead, and you come to Blair Atholl (18 miles), on the southern tip of the Cairngorms National Park.
Enter on the upper floor where there’s space to hang your coats. Step up to the hallway and then into an open-plan social space with a contemporary kitchen and dining suite to one end and, at the other, a lounge area with a choice of comfortable seating and a TV for all your favourite home-style entertainment. A cleverly concealed pull-down double griffin bed accommodates two guests. Sliding doors fill the front wall of this social space, opening onto a furnished conservatory with stunning views across the loch and surrounding hills. When it’s time to sleep, head back into the hall and follow the flight of stairs down to the lower floor where there are two flexible bedrooms, each with zip-and-link beds that can be made up as a double or twins. The master bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom, while a separate shower room is adjacent to a fabulous timber-clad sauna for an added touch of luxury.
The conservatory offers a comfortable link to the surrounding landscape – early-risers can enjoy the sight of cloud lifting from the loch in the morning sun, and later in the day the sunsets can be stunning. There is ample on-site parking on a first-come, first-served basis.
