Cottages in Looe

Looe paints the quintessential Cornish picture of whitewashed houses with slate roofs clinging to the side of the hills climbing up from the river.

Looe is a town of two halves situated as it is on both sides of the River Looe from which it takes its name. The harbour, located in East Looe, is a vibrant scene of colour with all sorts of craft from fishing boats to pleasure boats going about their daily business.

Both East and West Looe are connected by a bridge across the river so it is quite easy to go from one side to the other. East Looe is considered to be the more lively side, mainly as a result of the harbour, whilst West Looe is a very much quieter location although not deprived of good shops and restaurants.

The harbour is an important feature of East Looe and still has a working fishing fleet and it’s from this harbour that it is possible to take boating excursions or fishing trips out into the bay.Situated a mile off the coast from Looe is Looe Island, an area of about 22.5 acres and usually only accessible by boat from the mainland. The island is owned by Cornwall Wildlife Trust which provides a boat service there and back during the summer months.

There are a few buildings here, the most well-known of these being Island House which was built by Customs and Excise in 1876 to finally put pay to the smuggling activity for which the island had become a rather notorious base since the fifteen hundreds. The views up and down the coastline can be spectacular on a clear day, as far as Devon in one direction and down to Lizard Point to the west in the other.

A selection of stunning cottages and apartments await you in both East and West Looe, cosy fishermen’s cottages, granite houses through to modern and contemporary apartments.  If you can’t quite make up your mind then speak to one of our friendly team on 0333 2020899 for some more information and they can help you decide.
