Saltburn-by-the-Sea cottages

The Victorian zeal for seaside holidays is evident in Saltburn. More properly known as Saltburn-by-the-Sea, this elegant town – on the northern tip of the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast – retains its iconic Italian Gardens, a quirky cliff lift and a miniature railway. Today they’re complemented by a vibrant arts, food and surfing scene, while a range of convenience stores, cafes, bars and restaurants accommodate all your self-catering needs. A brilliant base for a family holiday, there’s much to do in Saltburn. Bathe and play ball games on the beautiful beach – dogs are always welcome to the right of the pier – or visit Pease Park; there’s a skate park, golf club and nature reserve to explore too. Neighbouring village Marske has a quieter, dog-friendly beach and a high street dotted with local stores, inns and eateries. It’s a 2-mile walk along the sands between these two coastal gems – far enough to work up an appetite!

Venture into the Cleveland countryside and North York Moors for walks and wildlife – the Cleveland Way runs all along this coastline before continuing across the National Park to Helmsley. Head south to explore Staithes – with cobbled streets and charming 18th-century cottages, this traditional fishing village has pubs, cafes, shops, and galleries and is the embarkation point for boat trips to Whitby, further down the coast. Famous for its racecourse, Redcar sits north of Saltburn. Wide golden sands, family amusements and pretty parks make this another holiday hot spot; climb Redcar Beacon for stunning views of the seafront.
