Visiting Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds is a market town, but its religious significance is equally important to its local history. The town is named after St Edmund, who was the original patron saint of England and ruled East Anglia during the sixth century. Today, you can visit St Edmundsbury Cathedral in the centre of town to learn more about this fascinating figure and explore the original Abbey ruins, which were once a famous pilgrimage site.

If you are interested in Bury St Edmund’s history, be sure to visit Moyse’s Hall, a twelfth-century building that is now a local history museum. From the Viking conquest of the town, to the present day, the museum has a fascinating collection of local artefacts and exhibitions that are very family-friendly.

If shopping trips and restaurant visits are more your thing, then Bury St Edmunds is a great holiday choice. Bury’s streets are lined with independent shops and big names alike and the same can be said for their selection of eateries. Some of our local favourite places to eat include Sakura Japanese food, La Maison Blue French cuisine and Gastrono-me for burgers, hot dogs and all that good stuff.

A stay in Bury St Edmund’s also puts you in a great spot to visit other nearby towns and villages, including Aldeburgh and Felixstowe in Suffolk, as well as Norwich in Norfolk and Ely in Cambridgeshire.
