Dedham Vale and the Stour Valley (11 miles) also boast some of the darkest skies in the UK, and the area's rural nature makes it the ideal spot for looking at the stars. For the history buffs, Clare Castle and Gainsborough's House are worth a visit, while the historic 'wool town' of Long Melford (13 miles) is a must-see for its impressive selection of shops, galleries and antiques. for those who need to scratch a retail itch, visit Ipswich 11 miles to the east.
