Visiting Plymouth

Plymouth is known for its maritime history and many of its cultural sites centre around this. Perhaps the most famous event to occur in Plymouth was the Mayflower’s maiden voyage to America, carrying many British pilgrims, in 1620. Today, you can learn more about the Mayflower and its passengers by visiting a number of sites across the city dedicated to the event. The Mayflower Steps, where the ship was boarded from, and the Mayflower Museum are both located in the Barbican area of the city and help tell the story of this historic voyage to visitors.

Other interesting cultural sites in Plymouth include The Hoe and its newest museum, The Box. The Hoe is set atop a grassy knoll, right on the seafront and offers some of the most panoramic views across to Plymouth Sound. The Hoe also boasts a lido, garden, restaurant and is home to the Royal Citadel, an area of the city built by Charles II in celebration of the restoration of the monarchy. The Box is perfect for art lovers and includes a vast collection of oceanic artwork and maritime artefacts.

Plymouth is still a city known for its boating activity, usually in the form of sailing nowadays. The city has recently hosted the international Sail Grand Prix and many flock here from across Britain and the world to compete and sail for simple pleasure every year.

As with any city, Plymouth’s true character can be found in its cobbled streets, lined with independent shops, local eateries and high street favourites alike. Offering something for everyone and with the south west coast right on your doorstep, Plymouth is nothing short of an excellent holiday destination.
