This handsome period cottage in Middleton, just west of Pickering, is a great choice for groups who want a tranquil base for country walks, coastal day trips, and relaxed evenings beside the fire. Pickering, 1.5 miles away, is worth exploring for its castle, characterful market-town streets, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Film buffs can visit Pickering Station, which appeared in Downton Abbey, then ride the line to nearby Goathland Station, which cameoed in the first Harry Potter film. Wander the weekly market in Helmsley (11 miles) to source a picnic treat, then venture to the coastal town of Whitby (22 miles) to bask on its sandy beaches, walk the picturesque harbour or tuck into its famous fish and chips. There’s also the Gothic Abbey ruins, which are sure to catch your eye. Following a day of exploring, the pub is just 150 metres away, making supper and evening drinks wonderfully easy.
