Explore the self-guided trails that take you around the fascinating mining heritage centre, or head to Alston, 5 miles away, for a nostalgic trip on the South Tynedale Railway. Just 5 miles away, see the impressive Ashgill Force, a 5-mile-long waterfall. Head to Corbridge (23.5 miles) for its independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. This was once the most northerly town in the Roman Empire, and today you can walk along the original surface of its Roman high street and see the intriguing Corbridge Hoard, a Roman time capsule that was buried in the 2nd century AD. In the opposite direction, Pooley Bridge, 29 miles away, is a boarding point for the famous Ullswater steamers.
