Holidays in Ulverston

Ulverston is a beautiful market town in the Lake District with cobbled streets and local artisan businesses. It is also home to the famous Hoad Hill Monument, known locally as the 'Salt & Pepper Shaker' monument due to its striking resemblance. Lying on the Furness Peninsulas, this wonderful little town is home to legendary comedic duo, Laurel and Hardy, with a museum commemorating their achievements in the town.

Ulverston's history and heritage

Ulverston is a town with a strong market and maritime heritage. Centuries ago, when the canal was built in 1796, Ulverston exported copper, slate and linen, all produced in Cumbria, all over the globe. The canal also happens to be the world's shortest, widest and deepest canal, stretching a mile and a half to the sea at Morecambe Bay. The Hoad Hill Monument is a pillar of recognition for Sir John Barrow, a founding member of the Royal Geographical Society and an intrepid explorer. At the top of the tower, you will be greeted by simply sublime views of Morecambe Bay, Lakeland Fells and beyond if the weather is in your favour.

Things to do in Ulverston

Ulverston is home to a number of wonderful attractions and events year-round. First of all, a stroll down Market Street is simply a must. Whether you are visiting the butchers for a locally sourced cut of Lakeland lamb or Cumberland sausage, or heading down to the old-school sweet shop for a classic pick 'n' mix, you're well-catered for. You could also visit Cumbria Crystal, the only producer of completely hand-blown crystal and glass in the country. Their products have appeared in James Bond movies and the award-winning period drama, Downtown Abbey! You can also try your hand at the trade in a series of hands-on workshops.

Ulverston hosts the Dickensian Festival each year too which is a fantastic street event and is one of the most popular Dickensian events in the country. Whether or not you choose to turn up in Dickensian attire is up to you.
