Description

The Garden Cottage sits at the rear of the garden of The Old School, reached via a short private drive leading to a secure courtyard with ample parking. The Cottage was originally the school tuck shop and is now transformed into a very comfortable retreat for two on the outskirts of the small village of Fairwarp, situated on the edge of the six and a half thousand acres of the Ashdown Forest.  The Garden Cottage has been converted with great attention to detail and offers a wonderful starting-point from which to set out and explore this lovely area of unlimited walking possibilities and nearby tourist attractions.

Enter via a screened and decked area with outside furniture for al fresco dining, and step into the warm and welcoming open plan living area, furnished and decorated beautifully.  There is a well-equipped modern kitchen and a separate double bedroom with an en-suite shower room.  At the rear of the property there is also seating overlooking the Forest, to which a private gate provides direct access. This area of outstanding natural beauty is perfect for walkers and cyclists, nature lovers and bird watchers.  Don't forget to pack your binoculars and walking boots!  Shop: 2 miles  Pub: 0.5 miles  Coast: 22 miles

Out and About:
Ashdown Forest - originally a deer hunting forest in Norman times, but stripped of its trees in the Middle Ages and is now a conservation area at the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 6,500 acres of heathland is an unusual UK habitat for rare birds and plentiful wildlife with national and international protection.

Ashdown Forest is also renowned as the home of Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh. As well as the Ashdown Forest, there are many National Trust properties, castles and gardens to explore all within an easy drive: Penshurst Place and Gardens, Chiddingstone, Scotney and Hever Castles, Sheffield Park and Gardens.  There is also the Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park and the Spa Valley Railway in Tunbridge Wells.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is about 10 miles away and offers a wide range of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.  The Sussex coastline is about an hour's drive away and you can hire bikes in Forest Row.  Treat yourself to afternoon tea at the Duddleswell Tea Rooms or the local Garden Centre (both just along the road) or to an evening pint in the local, Foresters Arms. The Hatch in Coleman's Hatch, the Griffin Inn in Fletching and the Foresters’ Arms all serve good food.

The nearest large town is Uckfield (an 8 minute drive) which has a train station with a direct hourly service to London.

Reviews

A fabulously tastefully furnished cottage where the owner has put guest comfort and entertainment to the fore. High specification and a much welcome arrival hamper. Perfect location to explore the area. We very much appreciated the excellent pre-arrival contact, personal recommendations including amazing local eateries. Superb location for much needed relaxing. We were sad to leave but did so feeling energised! We would recommend without hesitation.

Ms B,

The owner is a very lovely man. Kept in contact before the holiday. But gave us our privacy while there. The holiday home was spacious and had everything we needed. Very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely go back again. Thank you for a perfect holiday.

Mrs P,

The cottage was immaculate, with everything that you could need. The owners were friendly and helpful, giving lots of information about places to visit nearby. The property was cosy and warm, even though the weather was wet and windy. The welcome pack was very generous and meant we didn't need to worry about breakfast for the day after arrival.

Mrs J,

Thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage in the heart of the Ashdown Forest. Beautiful walks and picturesque villages to explore nearby. Plenty of National Trust properties within easy reach. A warm welcome was received by the hosts and they were extremely kind and courteous throughout our stay. Nothing to fault at all.

'The Cottage' is an excellent place to stay to explore the Ashdown Forest and the surrounding area. The owners have created an exceptionally well appointed retreat and supply a huge amount of items both in the kitchen and bathroom. The fixtures, fittings and appliances are all top quality. The hosts are on hand to give advice and recommendations of places to visit and answer any questions. From the first point of booking to returning home, they make their visitors feel extremely welcome.
