Deep in the Conwy Valley on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, betwixt Betws-y-Coed and Llandudno, lies the market town of Llanrwst – the perfect base for exploring Snowdonia and North Wales. 

Built up and developed around the wool trade, before becoming the centre of harp and clock manufacturing, Llanwrst is now a hub of tourism, offering the perfect base for adventurers to Mount Snowdon, Snowdonia National Park and Conwy’s many castles. 

One of Llanrwst’s most iconic sights is the three-arched bridge that crosses the fast-flowing waters of the River Conwy. Since the 16th century it has offered safe passage to pedestrians and vehicles across the water, to what is now known as Tu Hwnt I’r Bont – an iconic 15th-century tea room. The town of Llanrwst is not short of history, and it will easily satiate any budding historian. Treasures include a weighty stone coffin said to have been that of Llywelyn the Great, the revered 13th-century Prince of Gwynedd.

For those who enjoy a little exploration, a venture into Gwydyr Forest is worthwhile. This lovely woodland is latticed with numerous trails for all abilities and offers waymarked paths from mountain lakes to industrial heritage sites. If you’re feeling more energetic, continue your hike through the forest and discover two lesser-known lakes – Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant. For quieter days, spend your time popping into Llanwrst’s collection of individual shops, cafes, restaurants and curios.
