Applethwaite Hall, formerly known as The Common is a 27-room former gentleman’s residence in the foothills of Banner Rigg, a fell overlooking Windermere in the English Lake District.

Thomas Muirhead the man behind the famous pavilions at 2 English cricket test grounds the Kennington Oval (completed in 1898) and Old Trafford (completed 1895) designed The Common shortly after the completion of the grounds. It was built unusually for the lake district in rendered red brick between 1898 and 1901 for a mysterious Frank A Roberts, about whom little is known.

We had a lovely stay at Bam Lodge, it looks even better than the pictures! Very clean and modern interior, the outdoor area was perfect for our dog. Great location and beautiful views, you can walk to Orrest Head from the lodge in 20 minutes, perfect for watching the sunrise.

Dr K,

A beautiful property in a lovely part of the Lakes. Many wonderful walks from the door. Relaxing in the hot tub fab too, and safe, enclosed space meaning our doggy was 100% safe and could enjoy it with us. Would highly recommend.

Mrs D,

Amazing, comfortable property. Very well equipped with fantastic hot tub & state of the art technology. The property was easy to find & well located for restaurants in Windermere & Bowness.

Mrs W,

a lovely property in a great location. Very well maintained & well kitted out. The hot tub was a hit with our teenage girls, as well as us adults. Everything has been thought of.

Mrs G,

A very comfortable and well appointed property. We visited in a heatwave so the air-conditioning was very welcome and even though it was 30C outside, the hot-tub was also brilliant after a long day's walking. The public footpath near Orrest Head into Windermere is very useful although it is a bit further to get down to the lake. We had a super week and would recommend the lodge.

Mr G,

The location was excellent for us to use as a base for the lakes. If you want a location that is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the town, but close enough to walk in if needed then this is for you. A high standard of décor throughout and tasteful. The standard of equipment is high and you feel like you are at home.

Mr A,

The Lodge and Hall are situated in their own grounds in quiet surroundings, but only a mile from the centre of Windermere. The property is decorated and appointed to a very high standard. Truly a home from home experience. Everything needed for a true self catering holiday was there to be found. Enclosed garden area so pets can be secure. Hot tub and garden furniture and parking right outside the garden gate. What more could you ask. Would certainly return.

Mr P,
