Holidays in Kendal

With holiday cottages covering the whole of the Lake District, a true gem of a place to stay is Kendal. Kendal is a delightful market town in Cumbria with a lot to offer holidaymakers. With stunning natural surroundings and plenty to keep you entertained and refreshed, Kendal proves time and time again to be a wonderful holiday destination. We have a wide variety of holiday cottages in Kendal, including some delightful historic cottages for two and dog-friendly accommodation for those wishing to bring their canine companions along to enjoy big Lakeland walks. Sleeping upwards of three guests, many of our Kendal cottages are family friendly and visitors will be delighted to hear about the wonderful array of nearby attractions to suit all ages – read on if you want to find out more!

Things to do in Kendal

Starting with dog-friendly activities, nearby Holker Hall and Gardens for stately home dog walks among 25 acres of woodland, meadows and deer park – there’s even a dog-friendly cafe where there is a water tap and bowls. A little further away, try the Treasure Trail that starts right by Lake Windermere and is made for dogs; Windermere boat cruises also allow dogs on the boats for free.

Another favourite walking spot in the area is Serpentine Woods, which was originally grazing land and part of Kendal Fell and overlooks Kendal and the castle. The woods are home to a wide range of bird species, foxes, and squirrels. The trees and shrubs grow over a bed of limestone pavement that shows through its layer of foliage in several places. There are several paths that can be taken through the woods, with walks totalling around 3 miles in all. The woods have a nature trail with ten stops, each demonstrating a different environment within the woods. Deep into the woods is a quaint summer house, built in 1833, when the woods were only open to those who could afford an admission fee to pay towards the upkeep. With so many trails to explore, you can easily fill a day or two of your Kendal holiday exploring this beautiful woodland.

If you want to know more about the area, there is a local museum about the area’s history and wildlife, as although Kendal is a market town, it is also known as home to red kites, red squirrels, rabbits, and hares. For more history, visit Kendal Greenside Lime Kiln, an ancient monument which illustrates the area’s links to the lime-burning industry, propelled by the Kendal Canal using lime extracted from nearby quarries. This industry brought prosperity to the area in the 9th century.

Lastly, no trip to Kendal is complete without trying Kendal Mint Cake – the town’s most famous and delicious export! If you want to stay nearby, check out cottages in Windermere and properties in Sedburgh.
