Great days out

When you step out of your holiday cottage in East Devon, a whole world of possibility awaits you each day. This corner of the county is packed with entertainment for the young and young-at-heart. For those curious and passionate souls who can’t wait to discover something new, that will linger in the memory for years to come.

If the sight of steam trains fills you with excitement, then a day out at Pecorama is a must. This model railway just outside Beer (a hop and a skip from Withycombe) is a great day out for families and train enthusiasts alike, with fabulous gardens and sea views. Ride the Beer Heights Light Railway around the site, over bridges, past sidings and even a tunnel. It’s been described as one of the finest in Britain.

The kids will love seeing how many model moles they can spot along the way! There’s a fabulous indoor soft play centre (also railway-themed, naturally) and a model railway exhibition that boasts impressive levels of craft.

Although Pecorama is closed for 2020, they’ll be back with a bang in 2021 to welcome back anyone who has ever been enchanted by the magic of the railways.

Do battle with pirates

I love Crealy Theme Park, a fun-packed day out for families. Based near Exeter and the winner of loads of awards, there are over 60 indoor and outdoor rides to enjoy. My children’s favourite was the pirate ship ride. There are also 200 animals and 75,000 square feet of undercover play.

Book in advance for the best prices, and don’t forget to take your towels and swimmers so you can all fully enjoy the soak zone. The log flume and water slide are both a real treat on hot summer days!

An electric experience

The electric trams running along Seaton Tramway are the perfect start to any day out in the chocolate box town of Colyton and the seaside resort of Seaton. It’s a narrow-gauge tram that passes through open countryside, past estuary and wetlands where you can spot the abundance of wading wildlife, dragonflies and reeds.

The Polar Express tram experience at Christmas is renowned in the area and very popular so book well in advance! If you’re particularly passionate, you can even become a tram driver for the day.
