With its excellent visitor centre, walking and cycling routes around the lake and great opportunities for water sports, it makes for a fabulous day out. Another of the town’s unique attractions is the National Stone Centre (1.4 miles), which offers activities such as gem-panning and fossil-casting. There is even a traditional steam railway, complete with Victorian station cafe. Bakewell, Ashbourne, Dovedale, Matlock Bath (home to Gullivers Kingdom Theme Park), Chatsworth, and Haddon Hall are all within 12 miles.
