An incredible setting overlooking the River Lune makes this high-quality property a delightful choice for couples, friends or small families looking for days out in the Forest of Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales or the southern Lake District (the latter are both within 30 miles). It’s located on the Crook O’ Lune – a horseshoe-shaped bend in the river accessed only via a road bridge, gated for privacy, and enjoying shared grounds which are full of beautiful walking trails and wildlife. You can even paddle or swim in the river at certain points, or try your hand at fishing, available on site. Despite its secluded feeling, however, the cottage is only 5 miles from the M6 motorway, and around the same distance from the bright lights of the city of Lancaster. If you feel like a beach day, the seaside at Morecambe is only 7 miles away, too.
Set all on one level, this elegant, single-storey cottage is part of the historic Hermitage Estate, built for the Mayor of Lancaster in the 19th century. It has wonderful views of the River Lune, including enchanting Otter Island, from most rooms, and is tastefully decorated to the highest level throughout. From the entrance hall, turn left to the open-plan lounge/diner, where plush seating surrounds a Smart TV for relaxed entertainment, and there’s also a piano if you fancy picking out a few tunes. The dining table provides plenty of space for everyone to enjoy sociable mealtimes together. This comfortable room flows into a conservatory area, where more seating allows breathtaking views of the river through floor-to-ceiling windows. The sleek kitchen leads off the dining area and offers all the equipment you’ll need for preparing everything from hearty breakfasts to dinnertime feasts. The two bedrooms, each of which has a Smart TV, lie at the opposite end of the hall: a king-size with an en-suite shower room and ample storage, and a tranquil twin that uses an adjacent bathroom with a shower over the bath.
When you want to enjoy the sunshine, head out to the private, tiered garden which includes a patio with seating and a BBQ, a decked area with an outdoor sofa, and a fabulous hot tub right on the edge of the river – ideal for soaking tired muscles after a day exploring the area. Guests are welcome to stroll around the extensive shared grounds, enjoying the woodland and riverside (including a pebbled beach), perhaps packing a picnic or arranging a day of fishing. There’s bike hire available on site, too, and you’ll have parking space for two cars.
