Elterwater

Our office is based in a traditional stone cottage in Elterwater just a minute’s walk down the road from the central green with its magnificent maple tree. We are proud to offer luxury holiday cottages in Elterwater village itself ranging from cosy properties for two up to more extensive houses sleeping six people. All of our cottages are traditional, stone built and many have interesting histories which are reflected in their names. For example, The Bottom Shop and The Old Sawpit were once used as a joiners and wheelwrights respectively.

Elterwater is a pretty village, inhabited from ancient times with a bridge over the Great Langdale Beck close to the green. There are plenty of places to eat and drink right here in the village; the Maple Tree café, The Britannia pub and Elterwater Inn. Chesters café at Skelwith Bridge is a lovely stroll along a paved walkway past the Elterwater Lake. There are also a fantastic number of walks directly from the village into the Langdale fells so you never need to use the car once you have arrived.

Chapel Stile

Further west along the Langdale Valley is the village of Chapel Stile. Some of our holiday cottages in Chapel Stile were former quarrymen homes. The village has a church, Co-op which is stocked with a huge range of products, Wainwrights Inn and the Langdale spa. There is easy access to the spectacular Langdale Pikes and it is only a couple of miles to Great Langdale where you will find Sticklebarn, the National Trust’s only bar, and also the Old and New Dungeon Ghyll Hotels. Stop for a scenic drink or a bite to eat at any of these en route.

Little Langdale

Our holiday cottages in Little Langdale have a remote ‘away from it all’ feel and are situated beside the lovely River Brathay. For an exciting route try the Hardknott pass from here and discover the Roman fort. However, you are not far from the Three Shires Inn, so called as it was built at the meeting point of the former counties of Westmoreland, Cumberland and Lancashire.

Grasmere

Up on Red Bank with fabulous views overlooking Grasmere we can offer three properties that can be hired as separate units for 2, 4 and 11 people or combined for an extended party of 17. It is just over a mile down the lane to Grasmere village with its interesting shops, renowned gingerbread and places to eat. Wordsworth lived here at Dove cottage which is now a museum and described it as ‘the loveliest spot that man has ever found’.

Clappersgate, Skelwith Fold and Outgate

Further East from Elterwater, lying between Skelwith Bridge and Ambleside are our holiday cottages in Clappersgate, Skelwith Fold and Outgate. Several of the cottages in Clappersgate have been converted from buildings connected with the Croft estate and have a wealth of history.Our properties at Skelwith Fold and Outgate are peaceful with lovely views from the houses. The area is an ideal point for accessing the town of Ambleside, Windermere and Coniston Waters to the south and the visitor attractions of Hill Top and Wray Castle.

Ambleside

Our Ambleside cottages are right in the heart of the busy, popular town. You will find interesting shops, a couple of cinemas and lots of choice of eateries. If you want to get away from some bustle you can be up in the fells in just a few minutes with only the Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cows for company.

Broughton and the Duddon Valley

Also in our portfolio are holiday cottages in Broughton and the Duddon Valley to the west of Coniston Water. This is a lovely and largely unknown area with forested fells and the charming market town of Broughton. Scafell Pike, Old Man Coniston and the wild Wast Water lie to the north.
