Shaldon - The New Salcombe?

Over the years, South Devon has become known for many things, from its breathtaking coastline to the fabulous local food and drink. Historically speaking, the most prominent and sought-after location in our homeland has been Salcombe, a wealthy and popular resort town in the South Hams at the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary. With its charming waterfront location, wealth of shops, and of course a scattering of quality self-catering holiday cottages, it's no wonder that people flocked from far and wide to visit this charming village.

However, the times are changing, and the last few years have seen a new emerging star. A similarly picturesque village and again at the mouth of an Estuary, the ever-growing popularity of Shaldon is something which, to those of us who live here, has always been an obvious choice, but it looks like more and more customers every year are looking to find out what all the fuss is about!

Unspoilt and far-reaching views, two sandy beaches, and the Victorian seaside village of Teignmouth across the river are just a few of the draws of the hidden gem of South Devon's coast. Brought to prominence through increasing exposure in the media over the last few years, Shaldon offers a very differnt style of living to the hustle and bustle of everyday living, with its village shops, friendly atmosphere, and excellent selection of bars and restaurants for great food and drink.

Everything you could need is within walking distance, wherever you are in Shaldon. That's not to say it's small and cramped - in fact the opposite is true, helped only by the friendly and welcoming nature of the locals. Visitors can find a fine selection of local shops such as a post office, pharmacy, bakers (with newspapers & magazines), the general Village Store, a local butcher & green grocer as well as 5 pubs, many restaurants & cafés in both Shaldon and across the river in Teignmouth. And if you fancy exploring, leave your car parked on dry days and take the passenger ferry instead from Shaldon Beach, operating 364 days of the year (weather permitting!) - a great way to explore the Devon coastal towns and soak up the sea air!

Of course, Shaldon isn't all just shops and restaurants - it's also the perfect destination for family days out, with something for everyone! Fun and intrigue are guaranteed when exploring the great outdoor attractions which the village has on offer, including Shaldon Zoo and Wildlife Trust, Homeyards Botanical Gardens and The Nature Reserve at Labrador Bay. Keen golfers will surely want to take to Shaldon Approach Golf Course, considered to be one of the best approach courses in the South West, especially being so picturesque!

Of course, you don't need to spend a penny to explore the delights of Devon's most charming village - why not pack up a picnic and take to the South West Coastal Path, which you can walk either for just a short distance or miles on end. Follow the path round to Torquay, enjoy the sunshine and a light lunch, and catch the bus back down into the town - a great way to explore the coast.
