Meet the Owners...of Joiner's Mews

We recently asked our Joiner's Mews owners, Mr & Mrs Robinson, a few questions about their Lake District holiday cottage Joiner's Mews, and about holiday letting in Cumbria and the Lake District. Here’s what they told us;

What inspired you to start holiday letting in the Lake District?

We’d been regular visitors to the Lake District for a number of years and moved to Cumbria permanently to be nearer our family. As we had previous experience of running a busy holiday accommodation business in France, we knew that it would be the perfect fit to have a holiday cottage here in the Lake District. The countryside and lovely villages and towns make it the perfect place to welcome guests.

What have you found challenging about holiday letting?

We knew we would enjoy the whole process of buying and setting up our Lake District holiday cottage and launching the business. The only challenging aspect is having the patience to wait while the cottage becomes established.

What do you enjoy about holiday letting?

The best part of the business is meeting new people and seeing their delighted reactions when they first arrive at Joiner's Mews. The icing on the cake is the lovely comments they leave in the visitors’ book.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering letting their property as a holiday cottage in the Lake District?

Location, location, location. Find a lovely property that you’d like to stay in yourselves and then it’s easy for you to sell.     

What drew you to Joiner’s Mews?

We live five minutes from Joiner’s Mews and fell in love with it before the property even came on the market. It has old world charm but is a modern property with all the amenities and high standards that guests expect.

Can you tell us about the history or a story about your property, Joiner’s Mews?

The stone arch and garden door to Joiner’s Mews has a long history. The arch was originally the north entrance to the village church and was moved to its current location in about 1820. It became the garden gate of the vicarage which later became the Blue Bell – now the Heversham Hotel. When the Princes Way road was built and cut the vicarage garden in half, the site of our cottage became a joiner’s shop, hence the name Joiner’s Mews.

What’s your favourite room in your property? And why do you love it so much?

We love the sitting room in Joiner’s Mews because of the sunny aspect and the log burner which makes it feel so cosy.

What are the best three features about the accommodation at Joiner’s Mews, that your guests can enjoy?

It’s hard to choose what we like most about Joiner’s Mews. Top of the list is the location, which is the perfect base to explore the Lakes and the Dales. The walk-in shower is the ideal way to relax after a day walking or touring the area. The private, romantic garden is a great spot for an al fresco breakfast or an early evening drink and barbecue.

Is there a detail or hidden gem at Joiner’s Mews that guests may miss if they didn’t know it was there?

As we meet all our guests on arrival and explain, in detail, all that the cottage has to offer there shouldn’t be any hidden surprises.

Can you recommend a restaurant, pub or cafe local to Joiner’s Mews, where guests could enjoy a nice meal?

The Heversham Hotel is less than 100 metres away where you will find a very palatable pub meal at a reasonable price. No 17 in Milnthorpe is a great neighbourhood bistro, five minutes from Joiner’s Mews. There are many award-winning pubs and restaurants within half an hour of the property including The Punch Bowl at Crosthwaite, the Hare and Hounds at Levens and The Wheatsheaf at Brigsteer. The village of Cartmel, home to Simon Rogan’s renowned two-Michelin starred L’Enclume and Rogan & Co, which also has a Michelin star is 15 minutes away. Gilpin Hotel and Lake House is another Michelin-starred restaurant within about 25 minutes. We have lots of recommendations in our information folder.

Where would you recommend guests who stay at Joiner’s Mews visit during their Lake District holiday?

There is so much to explore in the beautiful Lake District. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and a national park. Our best advice would be to plan the things you definitely want to do but give yourself time to go off the beaten track and wander at will. We guarantee you’ll discover something wonderful that you weren’t expecting.
