If you go down to the woods today

Whilst I was at work on the hottest weekend of the year so far, my little boy had his very own Windermere adventure in the wood of Orrest Head with his Auntie and Uncle.

The route is just across from Windermere station on the A591 and involves a spiral uphill climb to the bottom of Orrest Head where a local craftsman has placed popular children’s character the Gruffalo from the much-loved Julia Donaldson books which my son, as well as many others, adore.

The book tells the story of a cunning mouse who uses his brain to avoid multiple creatures inviting him “to lunch” with concealed intentions and is a modern classic in my opinion.

The walk itself was Alfred Wainwrights’ first introduction to the Lake District and is a very short walk but perfect for superb views of the southern lakes for relatively little effort. Much of the route is signposted so it is ideal for a novice like me.

If you would like to have your very own Windermere woodland adventure, please have a look at our fantastic range of self-catering cottages.
