Elterwater in Bloom

One of my favourite things about working at Original Cottages Lake District as we head into summer is the array of colourful blooms I’m fortunate to gaze upon whilst out checking properties for arrivals, it has even inspired me to create my own window box as unfortunately, I do not have a garden of my own. I have started to learn what flowers turn up in which months and always try to find out the name of a flower if it catches my eye!

Many flowers grow in the wild in and around Langdale beginning with the snowdrops in January/February the Daffodils March/April till we head into Bluebell season in May. In June we see the arrival of the Foxgloves which are depicted in Beatrix Potter’s Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck. By July we begin to see Hydrangeas and some of our properties such as Hacket Forge and Brathay loft are lucky enough to have elegant wild roses growing and as the season changes different flowers begin to appear in the predecessor’s place until late October early November when most of the flowers don’t reappear till the following year, however, autumn & winter have their own version of beauty with the autumn leaves and if we are lucky like last year snow which is just a glorious in its own right. Then we wait for the snowdrops again to signify spring is on the way!

Flowers are not only beautiful to look at, smell and photograph but they provide vital food and shelter for our much-loved bumble bees and we are lucky to be in an area where wild flowers grow at the roadside as much of the landscape is unspoilt. We are fortunate enough to have many spectacular gardens here with talented gardeners who keep them looking as vibrant as possible all year round. If you are interested in adding flowers to your garden, make sure you check the label to see if it’s a good pollinator.

If you would like to spend a break amongst the flowers with your family and friends, please do not hesitate to have a look at our handpicked range of holiday cottages and enjoy lazy summer days discovering the beauty of the Lake District.
