Property code: OC-MONKS

Monks Cottage is a stunning thatched cottage with the looks to grace any postcard or chocolate box dating back centuries. But there is a price to pay for historic charm. The cottage is best suited to guests of 18th century stature when the average height was much less than it is now. Mind your head on the ceiling and door lintels. Also, the stairs are steep.

This gorgeous home is just on the edge of Braunton in the heavenly hamlet of Heanton. The 16th century Church of St Augustine sits next to Monks Cottage, which is in the centre of a row of three, and retains all the charm and character of its age with substantial oak beams throughout. The front door is straight off the lane and opens into a roomy hall plenty of storage for coats and walking boots or buckets and spades. In the lounge, comfortable sofas surround a feature inglenook fireplace with electric effect woodburner.  There is a separate dining room with a large oak table. The kitchen is fully equipped and looks out over a tidy and fully enclosed cottage garden. In keeping with its age, the cottage has a newly fitted ground floor family bathroom, but there is also a cloakroom upstairs. On the first floor, there are three bedrooms offering flexible sleeping arrangements, a cosy double room and two connected twin rooms.

Braunton is short drive away and has a variety of restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops. It is also home to the Braunton and District Museum, the Braunton Countryside Centre and the Museum of British Surfing. At the heart of what is said to be England's most biodiverse parish, Braunton Burrows is abundant with richly varied wildlife. The Tarka Trail, a footpath and cycle trail built along the route of the old railway line, runs through Braunton

We had a lovely week staying at Monks cottage. It's located in a quiet area but still close enough to shops, pub and restaurants. The garden was an added bonus which our dogs loved and looked well cared for. The downside was the very slow WIFI, no reception on phones inside either. The ceilings are very low and we did bang our heads a few times. ClRead moreattering up the stairs with the hoover was very challenging as steps very uneven and low doorways. Only had to do it once though so all good. Would recommend if you can live without proper WIFI and are the size of a hobbit. Hide

The cottage could do with some TLC. Mirrors left on windowsills with sun reflection these can cause fires, not good with a thatched roof.

Quirky cottage in a fairly isolated location. The local pub, the Williams Arms, was very good but walk is down/up very steep hill on narrow road with no pavement. Cottage has good facilities, except wifi. There is a router but still the signal is very weak. There is a tiny tv which has Netflix but the signal wasn't strong enough to actually launch Read moreNetflix. Heating is storage heaters so very little control, 2 of the bedrooms were incredibly hot! Really lovely position in a small hamlet. Lots of kitchen equipment including cafetire, teapot. A nice walk to Williams Arms (uphill on the way back). Small enclosed garden, we took our camping chairs, which I would recommend if you want to sit in the garden and relax. The car needed to go to the beaches. Lovely old cottage situated on a steep hill and near an Evangelical church which is so charming. Having stayed here many times with my family I know it and love it like my own!
