Situated in a wooded valley owned by the National Trust, with a footpath leading down to the beach, this traditional cottage offers a tranquil rural escape for a family or small group of friends. The cottage is one of two and is reached via a narrow, steep gravel track (unsuitable for low-suspension or wide/long vehicles) just over a third of a mile long. The valley lies within a larger Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it perfect for walkers. Guests can enjoy local coastal paths, including the South West Coast Path.
In May, the woods are carpeted with bluebells and wild garlic, while in June, the meadows burst into colour with vibrant wildflowers. Peppercombe Beach, famous for its striking red cliffs and waterfall, is a short walk away and offers sand, rock pools, prawning, swimming, and surfing (traditional wooden boards are provided in the cottage). Check the tide tables-at high tide the beach is pebbly, but it’s perfect for a sunset beach fire!
Inside, a homely living room features a large stone fireplace with a wood burner, wooden flooring, and latch doors leading into the kitchen/diner. The kitchen has a slate floor and is fully equipped for meal preparation. Adjacent, a utility area provides a washing machine, tumble dryer, freezer, and hanging, drying, and storage space for coats and boots. The ground floor also includes a family bathroom with a shower and bath, and a separate cloakroom with a WC. Upstairs, the bedrooms enjoy countryside views, including a large master bedroom with a double bed, a generous single, and a smaller single.
Outside, the property boasts a pretty garden with a covered pond and multiple areas to relax. A picnic table sits in front of the cottage. Nearby pubs provide drinks (Coach & Horses) and (Hoops Inn, Bell at Parkham, and Thatch at Abbotsham) provides meals after a day of exploring.
In the surrounding area, the historic ports of Bideford and Appledore are 6–7 miles away, as is Clovelly and the spectacular Hartland Peninsula coast (11 miles, with a good pub). Westward Ho! and Braunton Burrows-part of the North Devon Estuary Biosphere-offer an expansive beach and dunes just over 8 miles away. Families can also enjoy attractions such as the BIG Sheep, the Ultimate Adventure Centre, or Milky Way Adventure Parks, all approximately 4 miles along the A39 from the top of the lane.
