Hidden away down a narrow street just behind the seafront of Appledore is Birds Cottage, a charming dog friendly cottage with cute rear courtyard. Full of character with exposed stone fireplaces and thick wooden mantelpieces, a butler sink in the kitchen and pretty inglenooks, this three bedroom cottage also has some modern touches to make a holiday at any time of year a pleasure. The cosy living room has comfortable settees and a wood burning stove set inside an exposed stone fireplace for cooler evenings and there is a separate dining room – also with a stone fireplace. The kitchen has an interesting mix of old and new which works well in this pretty cottage – the modern units blend in well with the old butler sink set on red bricks. A back door from the kitchen leads out onto a small courtyard with outside table, chairs and barbecue. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms – a double with an iron bedstead and two singles (one with an extra pull-out bed for flexible sleeping arrangements) – and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. Birds Cottage is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the quayside along the quaint, narrow streets where many of the fishermen’s cottages date back to the Elizabethan era. The quayside has a small but interesting range of pubs, restaurants, shops and galleries. A seasonal ferry takes passengers to the pretty little village of Instow, with its sheltered stretch of sandy beach, cosmopolitan yacht club and further choice of family friendly pubs & restaurants. Historically celebrated for its artists and craftspeople Appledore now boasts an arts festival and the Appledore Crafts Company, an artist’s co-operative showcasing a broad range of arts and crafts from ceramics and photography to jewellery and painting. A thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century, Appledore has been a famous boat-building centre for many years and the shipyard is still active today. There are pleasant walks along the south facing quay, whilst the popular surfing beach at Westward Ho! is just a 5 minute drive away.
