Property code: OC-BIRD

Hidden away down a narrow street just behind the seafront of Appledore is Birds Cottage, a charming dog friendly cottage with cute rear courtyard. Full of character with exposed stone fireplaces and thick wooden mantelpieces, a butler sink in the kitchen and pretty inglenooks, this three bedroom cottage also has some modern touches to make a holiday at any time of year a pleasure. The cosy living room has comfortable settees and a wood burning stove set inside an exposed stone fireplace for cooler evenings and there is a separate dining room – also with a stone fireplace. The kitchen has an interesting mix of old and new which works well in this pretty cottage – the modern units blend in well with the old butler sink set on red bricks. A back door from the kitchen leads out onto a small courtyard with outside table, chairs and barbecue. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms – a double with an iron bedstead and two singles (one with an extra pull-out bed for flexible sleeping arrangements) – and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. Birds Cottage is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the quayside along the quaint, narrow streets where many of the fishermen’s cottages date back to the Elizabethan era. The quayside has a small but interesting range of pubs, restaurants, shops and galleries. A seasonal ferry takes passengers to the pretty little village of Instow, with its sheltered stretch of sandy beach, cosmopolitan yacht club and further choice of family friendly pubs & restaurants. Historically celebrated for its artists and craftspeople Appledore now boasts an arts festival and the Appledore Crafts Company, an artist’s co-operative showcasing a broad range of arts and crafts from ceramics and photography to jewellery and painting. A thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century, Appledore has been a famous boat-building centre for many years and the shipyard is still active today. There are pleasant walks along the south facing quay, whilst the popular surfing beach at Westward Ho! is just a 5 minute drive away.

Lovely clean cottage, in a great location. We appreciated the small touches like a tea set and biscuits laid out for us on arrival, and some wood ready-split to be burned in the wood burning stove etc. The shower has good water pressure and the beds are comfortable- the heating works well and the place gets cozy quickly on a chilly day if needed. TRead morehe freezer compartment in the fridge didnt really seem to work (everything melted or went soggy) so just bear that in mind if youre stocking up on ice cream or ice before you check in! Overall a really lovely stay, and Appledore is a beautiful place to relax and take in the sea views. Hide

The cottage was lovely, set in a quiet tiny street and very easy to drop down to quay etc. Johns the deli, cafe and food store a great resource around the corner. The fresh fish shop nearby also brilliant! Great base to explore some beautiful North Devon places which was lovely. This time it included Hartland Abbey, with its lovely walk down toRead more a remote cove, Putsborough Beach (alongside Woolacombe) and the gorgeous gardens of a Marwood Hill with its ponds and natural gardening style. Lovely cosy cottage in the heart of Appledore. Well equipped. As 4 adults and a dog was a little small (particularly the sofas!) great location.

The cottage is in a good location and Appledore is lovely with nice places to eat and drink. We spent a lot of time on the beach at Westward Ho! which is amazing. The dog had the best time.

The property was just as described on the website, very comfortable and extremely clean. The information provided beforehand and regular reminders of arrival and departure information were helpful and well received. We would certainly book again and recommend Marsdens Devon Cottages to friends and family.
