Surrounded by gorgeous Galloway countryside, this chocolate-box cottage makes a great choice for any outdoorsy group and their canine companion. Drive 3.5 miles north to find Dalbeattie Forest, which offers a mix of tranquil walking paths, scenic viewpoints, picnic spots and mountain biking trails, while a mile further on, the town has a range of shops and eateries where you can source tasty supplies and unique souvenirs. Alternatively, drive less than 3 miles east and discover Sandyhills Beach, which is famous for its golden sands and dramatic tidal changes, while even closer to home Kippford and Rockcliffe sit beside the River Urr. The Jubilee Path links these two pretty villages – follow the 2-mile trail past ancient hill forts and flowering meadows. Further afield, the historic towns of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright are less than 20 miles from your doorstep, while romantic Sweetheart Abbey and historic Threave Castle are within 16 miles.

Nestled amid a patchwork of green fields and dry-stone walls, this cute cottage has a choice of social spaces where friends and family can unwind. Step inside and the main lounge has a striking fireplace with feature wood panelling. Stretch out to watch TV, lighting the open fire for added warmth – this room is all about relaxation. In contrast, the dining/dayroom has a lighter colour palette, with white-painted panelling, a pine dining suite, and a choice of seating arranged before its TV. Gather here to enjoy meals served fresh from the nearby kitchen, or carry snacks and drinks straight from the fridge into the conservatory, where you can unwind with stunning views across open farmland to the Galloway Hills. When it’s time to retire, two bedrooms and a bathroom are off the first-floor landing. Choose between a double room with wood panelling and its own TV, or a twin room with a handy vanity unit; both have sloping ceilings and pretty views.

Park outside and follow the path through the lawned front garden to the storm porch and front door. A small, cottage-style garden wraps around the property – to the rear, doors from the conservatory open onto a gravelled patio area with outdoor furniture, a BBQ and a low wall allowing lovely field views.

A wonderful place to stay. Lots to do in the local area and the cottage is a superb base. Beautifully finished, well equipped and very homely. We will definitely look to stay here if we visited this area in the future. Also recommendations for Scoffers and Irvings Bakery

Had a very nice stay at st Marys cottage. It is well equipped and clean. The beds were also very comfortable. We enjoyed sitting in the conservatory and enjoying the view. It is ideally situated for exploring the area. Especially enjoyed Bainloch deer park and RSPB Mearsehead. The little shop at Colvend is well stocked and Tesco not too far away aRead moret Castle Douglas. Only downside is small car parking space and the new shower broke 3 days into our stay and the owners couldnt get it repaired until after our stay .. had the novelty of having baths instead ! Hide

The cottage was lovely, well equipped and absolutely spotless. The stairs are quite steep, not for the faint hearted and the cottage was quite chilly at night, an excellent excuse to fire up the amazing range! All in all a lovely stay and one to be recommended.

Loved staying at st marys cottage,really quirky cottage,loved the layout and the homelyness.The location was great too,perfect for doggie walks.Would love to stay there again. It just needs a right good deep clean.

Had a lovely peaceful holiday at St Mary's Cottage. It was ideal for travelling to Southerness, Rockcliffe, Kippford, Dalbeattie and Castle Douglas. Great to sit in the conservatory and relax. Only possible down side was the stairs as they are narrow, winding and steep which could cause problems for someone with mobility issues. Fantastic holiday in a beautiful location. The views from the back of the cottage are lovely and it is well equipped. The thing that let it down and would prevent us from booking again until resolved was the cleanliness. I was very dusty and we had to clean the kitchen and bathroom before using.

It is a lovely cottage, quaint and dinky however the level of cleanliness was poor. The freezer compartment had frozen food residue which we managed to clean off eventually and the shower are had quite a lot of discolouration and some mold which we were able to clean with the mold remover spray. The cups and glasses were a bit dirty in places and Read morethe grill pan hadnt been cleaned under the cover. The cleaning stuff had been kind of abandoned in the conservatory along with other pet items. The mattress protectors had stains on them. This all made you feel everything wasnt very clean although thats probably not fair. The views are great and the cottage could be fantastic with a little more care and less of a feeling of living in someones home rather than a holiday rental. Hide

The location was ideal, within easy driving distance or walking distance of many interesting and beautiful places. Dumfries and Galloway is a great part of Scotland, particularly if you enjoy walking. The cottage had everything we needed and we were were warm and comfortable. It was a bit cluttered, as mentioned in my review for the host, but that Read morewas a minor niggle. For two people it did the job nicely, but perhaps would be a bit of a squash for four, particularly with the regard to the kitchen area. Hide

Cottage is small only really big enough for 4 people and there isnt a great amount of storage . Saying that its a wonderful, wonderful location for walking lots of baths to the beach and through the forest . Comfy beds and we were told no kitchen salt and pepper, oil etc when in fact all the basics were there . Very, very well equipped kitchen . AlRead morel in all a great experience but a bit small for 4 adults . Hide
