This idyllic hideaway is in the charming coastal village of Carsethorn in Dumfries and Galloway. The characterful ground-floor apartment, which boasts spectacular views across the Solway Firth, suits couples and small families (a sofa bed can accommodate an extra guest) looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Stroll out of your front door and onto the village’s wild and rugged beach, which is often teeming with rare birds, or wander 2 miles along the coast to spend a relaxing afternoon exploring the magnificent floral displays at Arbigland House. For a more traditional beach-side day, both Southerness (5 miles) and Sandyhills (8 miles) are also within easy reach. Other nearby attractions include RSPB Mersehead (5.5 miles) and Caerlaverock Castle (21 miles) or you can spend a day soaking up history and heritage in the former royal burgh of Dumfries, 14 miles away.
The holiday home is set in a row of attractive former fishermen’s houses along the seafront. Enter the ground-floor accommodation via the colourful front garden, which is shared with the neighbours, and inside you’ll find an apartment full of personality, with rich hues, plush fabrics, and the owner’s vibrant artwork adorning the walls. A step-up leads to the vestibule, where you can leave sandy shoes and coats, before heading through to the cosy lounge with its bold colour scheme and roaring wood burner. Unwind here after a day at the coast, reading a few pages from your book or watching a movie on the Smart TV. The separate kitchen/diner is equipped with everything needed to rustle up delicious feasts, which you can enjoy at the cute dining table. The super-king-size bedroom offers a tranquil haven for a good night’s sleep, along with patio doors to the garden where you can sip your morning coffee. Rounding off the apartment is a contemporary bathroom with a small bath and walk-in shower.
Immediately outside the cottage is a picnic bench where you can sit with a glass of wine, and to the rear is a patio area – a real suntrap – with furniture for al fresco dining. Across the road from the property is a charming beach garden, where you’re welcome to sit and take in the magnificent views across the estuary. The apartment’s owner is a renowned local artist and, by prior arrangement, guests are invited to take a tour of her nearby studio. Private parking is available for one car.
