The historic island of Lindisfarne/Holy Island is also accessible across the causeway (8 miles) with its ancient castle, fascinating heritage centre, peaceful beaches and bird-watching stations. Back on the mainland, you can head north to the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (7.5 miles), close to the Scottish border.
