Avid historians can visit Brough Castle, 8 miles away, or the Stainmore Railway Company museum in Kirkby Stephen. The walk around Stenkrith Park passes through old woodland and there is a great wild swimming spot at the far end of the park. The nearest lake is Haweswater, 20 miles away, surrounded by the Mardale fells and there is some fantastic walking here. The Lake District National Park is ideal for all outdoor pursuits, with Lake Windermere 24 miles away, making this a fantastic base for your holiday.

Bright and cheerful throughout, there is a sunny welcome at this charming, stone cottage which has lovely views towards the Howgill Fells. All on one floor and with a ramp leading to the entrance, this home from home is suitable if anyone in your group has limited mobility. The sofa and armchairs are perfectly positioned to make the most of the view and, on chilly evenings, the electric fire creates a warming ambience as you watch one of the DVDs. The kitchen is equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and plenty of storage space. The bedrooms are bright yet cosy with large windows that make the most of the views. There is a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, which both share a shower room.

Outside the private terrace has views towards the Howgill Fells and garden furniture where you can relax with a coffee in the morning and a glass of wine as the sun goes down. The cottage was spotlessly clean on arrival with a welcome bottle of milk & biscuits to accompany a much needed cuppa + welcome biscuits for my dog It was well kitted out with high end furnishings and plenty of equipment for the most discerning cook The layout was well thought out and worked well with the opportunity to use the roof garden whenRead more the weather permitted the lawned areas of the garden were well maintained I canot thank Helen and John enough for their help and advice throughput the stay particularly with my car issues The location was handy for day trips out and the views over the rolling hills and seeing cattle and sheep grazing naturally was amazing - the night skies were fantastic If youre lucky enough to see a red squirrel in the garden like I did its an absolute bonus Hide

Helen was most welcoming and managed to get us a high chair and travel cot for our 2yr old. Our dog too, loved the property and there was fishing nearby so all parties were very satisfied. Will be back in Winter was the views and local walks were incredible in summer, but want to experience. All seasons here

We had a lovely holiday, thank you. Howgill is cosy, peaceful and compact - yet very well designed and in a great location for access to the Lake District, the Eden Valley and the Yorkshire Dales. Perfect for us as we're avid fell walkers. The outlook from the lounge, main bedroom and hallway windows are delightful with uniterrupted views of the HoRead morewgill Fells. We enjoyed eating out in nearby Ravenstonedale and also enjoyed a quick round of golf their too. We hope to re-visit one day. Hide

Howgill cottage was a really lovely cosy base for our week away. Brilliant view from the cottage and the amazing rooftop terrace of the amazing howgill fells. We drove to ravenstondale to get the bus to sedbergh and walked back along the howgill fells but did it twice as the first time the cloud was so low we couldnt see anything! The cottage is suRead moreper comfy and well equipped we cooked every night apart from one (when we had delicious fish and chips in the kings head). Lovely friendly hosts too Hide
