Property code: OC-BX020

This 300-year-old cobb cottage is located in a traffic-free zone in the harbour town of Brixham, one of three towns clustered around the bay of Torbay in South Devon. The town has a proud maritime history, and the harbour is still the thriving centre of the town today, with fishing vessels, tour boats, and the Torquay ferry running to and fro. There are a number of beaches in the town, including the quiet St Mary’s Bay, the main Breakwater Beach and Shoalstone with its impressive 53-metre tidal pool. For those who want to find out more about the town’s heritage, there is a wonderfully constructed replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, The Golden Hind, moored up at the harbour, offering five decks of hands-on exhibits to explore.

Take your time walking through the traffic-free area that surrounds the cottage and access the entrance via a set of steep steps. This memorable property is full of cottage culture and traditional touches that make it a lovely cosy seaside retreat. It has been thoughtfully styled with antique furniture to offer a wonderful place to stay. Upon entering the cottage, guests will find themselves in the open-plan living space with cosy underfloor heating, an attractive beamed ceiling, and a warming wood burner. The kitchen has been hand-built with reclaimed wood and is equipped with everything you might need for a seaside stay - there’s even a breakfast bar seating two and a coffee machine for that morning caffeine hit. The lounge area has a comfortable sofa and two easy chairs from which to enjoy the Smart TV, or you can just spend the evening chatting around the wood burner. The furniture might not always match but these quirky stylings are in keeping with the age and character of the cottage. Steep cottage-style stairs lead to the first floor, where the first floor offers a reading room/dressing room, along with the shower room which offers a compact shower and WC. The master bedroom, on the second floor, is a stunning room, with its double bed, sloping ceiling, and French window which opens onto a Juliet balcony offering glimpses of the sea.

Outside, to the front of the property, is an enclosed seating area with a table and chairs, which makes an ideal spot for enjoying al fresco drinks among the potted plants and wall climbers.

A lot of steps to climb so you need to be fit. Also you may struggle with parking in high season. Anyone with breathing problems will struggle with this property. We did have a nice holiday in spite of any issues.

A lovely location to explore Brixham. The cottage is very cosy and comfortable. It has everything we wanted for a couple of nights to celebrate a birthday and the New Year. It is good value, clean, well-presented and full of charm. We really enjoyed our stay.

Great little fisherman's cottage which could not be more central. The Burton Inn pub is fab with cheap food and a friendly welcome. Also the Queens Arms is a top pub. We use the bus service to get around which was great as no. 12 bus goes every ten minutes or so. Hopefully we will be back..

We had a lovely stay at Giffin Cottage thank you, and would recommend it. The property was clean and is nicely decorated and there is a lovely harbour view from the main bedroom. Location is v. central but does involve a flight of steps up from the quayside but was manageable. Parking in Brixham is not easy - the owner's tip to unload outside the sRead morehops at the quayside was helpful. The best option for longer term is Oxen Cove carpark which is 5 mins walk along the tow path. Hide
