Merlin Cottage is set in a sheltered valley surrounded by wonderful Cornish countryside in the small hamlet of Milltown. Peaceful and quiet, this 500 year old cottage traditionally decorated with antiques with low ceilings and original beams is within 400 yards of the River Fowey and a lovely place to stay for those who like to be close to nature. The popular port town of Fowey and several beautiful sandy beaches are all a ten minute drive, with the nearest shops and inns two miles away in the market town of Lostwithiel. This lively town has plenty of independent shops, cafes and restaurants to explore as well as more than its fair share of interesting antique and vintage establishments. Merlin Cottage was believed to have once been a 'kiddlywink' - somewhere locals could buy beer and cider to drink outside (as opposed to inside like an Inn).  Built of stone and cob the property has created a comfortable holiday base with a woodburner for cosy nights in and perfect for peaceful strolls along the Fowey River. The lovely garden and paved terrace provide a pretty spot for a meal alfresco whilst listening to the birds. Adjoining the cottage is a large stone store room which is ideal for housing canoes, mountain bikes or a trailer.

Good for us but probably dated to others. Lanes from cottage difficult as only single track. Overall enjoyed our stay.

Weve been coming for years. It's an absolute gem, its so rare to be able to stay in a cottage with such history with full access and freedom to explore it in its entirety. Then we explore further afield for seal spotting, lido swimming, boat adventures, theatre performances at the Minnack etc. Thank you for continuing to rent out at very fair prices. Hide

The cottage was very well located for exploring and was well set up and looked after. We enjoyed the quirkiness of the character. Everything was clean and we enjoyed our stay. Would particularly recommend for dog walkers as the local walks are gorgeous!

Loved our stay at Merlin Cottage. If you want a back-in-time stay in a peaceful hamlet with a gorgeous walk to Lostwithiel two minutes from the front door, youve come to the right place! Highlights for us were the fabulous log-burner (full instructions available) and a full log store, great for combatting an mizzly day in the valley, and a well-equRead moreipped kitchen with family dining table. The WIFI signal was 100%! The bathroom is newly appointed with an excellent shower, great for coming home to after a day at the beach. Excellent appliances. Comfortable and rustic cottage experience which was made even better because my dogs could enjoy it too! Hide

Absolutely delightful, remote cottage. We loved our 2 week stay. The cottage is perfect if you want old and quiet. The lanes to approach it are very narrow, and have very few passing places, so not for everyone, but we loved it. It is perfectly resourced for a self-catering cottage and has plenty of room for 5 people and a dog. The beds were super Read morecomfy. Hide

We found it very very dated inside, the neon yellow hallway upstairs very strange. Lovely wood burner. Overall we weren't impressed and left early, needs money spending on it to bring up to scratch.

Merlin Cottage is beautiful and so well located for easy access to many landmarks in Cornwall. There are amazing walks immediately as you step out of the front door and having the river so close by is a real bonus. The cottage is set in a tiny hamlett with friendly neighbour's. Be prepared to drive down some very narrow lanes with no passing plRead moreaces to get there! The nearby town of Lostwithiel is quaint but well serviced with a coop, restaurants and takeaways. We can highly recommend the Moonlight Tandoori. Lostwithiel can be walked to in around 30 minutes through the countryside and along the picturesque river. Lovely beaches are about 15 min by car. We loved the nearby town of Fowey and the Eden project is on the doorstop. Top tip, Eden offer a very generous discount if, like us, you're on universal credit. The cottage it self is full of charm, well equipped and clean. The owners left us tea, biscuits, fresh milk and toiletries which was a nice touch. Ceilings are low, you can't stand straight if you're over 6ft like my son. This is to be expected of a 500 year old cottage and part of its charm. We enjoyed cosying up in the evenings around the fire. Remember to bring matches to get the fire started because these weren't provided. Merlin has some fantastic outside space to sit and eat or have a coffee. We made full use of this whilst we were there. Aside from benches and and an outside table, deck chairs and loungers were also provided. Overall, Merlin Cottage is the perfect base for a Cornish holiday. Just watch your head on the beams! Hide
