This dog-friendly getaway is located on a working farm in a stunning rural location, perfect for solo adventures and couples’ holidays – with room for two children as well. From your door you can directly access Smardale Gill Nature Reserve, where you can follow the old railway track to Smardale Gill Viaduct (1.5 miles), looking out for red squirrels and rare butterflies, and enjoying spectacular views along the way. The Coast to Coast walk is just half a mile from this retreat. Venture 2.5 miles to reach the vibrant market town of Kirkby Stephen, with its array of shops, galleries, pubs, cafes and restaurants. If you feel like venturing further, Great Asby Scar (10 miles) is renowned for its limestone pavements and rare plant species, while Great Shunner Fell, the third-highest summit in the Yorkshire Dales, is 18 miles away.

The cosy, timber-clad hut has been designed for warmth and comfort and is decorated with natural materials to echo the views outside. It’s fully insulated, and boasts underfloor heating too. Take the four timber steps up to the deck and the front door, entering the beautiful living/cooking/dining/sleeping space. Tucked in the corner is a double bed. Next to it is a plush sofa (which converts to a sofa bed for one or two children) facing a Smart TV – ready for your next box-set binge. In the kitchen you’ll find everything necessary for whipping up delicious holiday meals: a small hob, a fridge and a microwave, with two bar stools for dining tucked below the wooden worktop. Finally, you’ll have an en-suite shower room, fully plumbed with hot and cold water and a flushing WC.

From the small raised deck you can sit and take in the glorious views, and there’s a picnic table on the gravel area below for al fresco dining, with an enclosed lawn beyond. Private parking is available beside the lodge for 1 car.
