This charming watchtower is set high on a hill above the River Taw, less than a mile from the market town of Barnstaple and its array of pubs, shops, restaurants, cinema and a theatre. The long sandy beaches of Westward Ho! Saunton and Croyde are within easy reach too and are popular surfing spots if you enjoy watersports. To make your break extra special you could take the iconic day trip across to Lundy Island from nearby Bideford or enjoy long evening walks through the Braunton or Northam Burrows, where you’ll be sure to witness romantic sunsets when the weather allows.

Step through the front door of the property and into the open-plan accommodation, which due to its unique nature offers a great setting for guests who wish not to cook during their break. The downstairs open-plan kitchen/diner offers a electric oven, microwave and fridge. On the ground floor you will also find a shower room with WC. Stairs take you to the first floor which has a beautifully decorated open-plan lounge, double bed and Smart TV. It’s here that you can truly appreciate the beautiful views across the river too.

Outside the property there is a shared lawn garden, which has outdoor seating for Watchtower guests only. On sunny evenings you can relax outdoors and watch the sunset over the river.

In a heatwave the balcony shown is for decoration only and all windows and doors on the upper floor are either locked or painted shut. The only seating is pointing away from the TV and the space is too small meaning dragging them into a position blocking access to the bed or across the top of the stairs (dangerous). The only sink to wash in is barRead moreely the size of my hand in width, approximately 15" long and 2 1/2" deep. The floor was black with dirt and for 3 days of our holiday my partner suffered severe diarrhoea. The position of the watchtower is spectacular but don't let that fool you the property itself is very poor. Hide

The Watchtower is a quirky unusual property. It's rather small so there is no room for a wardrobe or drawers, consequently you will have to be happy to keep clothes in your suitcase. Be aware that the bathroom is tiny, large people will really struggle. The property could do with a little tlc but it was adequate for a short break. Don't expect Read morea good internet connection as TV channels keep going off, make sure you have a good book with you. The Watchtower is at the end of a private dirt track road with muddy puddles. Really lovely and unique place to stay with a quirky charm. Its perfectly located, close to the main town and amenities, yet still feels private and peaceful. The views are beautiful, and it has everything you need for a comfortable stay.

We had a lovely stay at the Watch Tower, it's in a beautiful and peaceful setting with 360 degrees views. It's well equipped and has plenty of places within walking distance or a short drive. Would love to stay again when the weather is warmer and make the most of the views and sunsets!

Absolutely loved staying at the watch tower. the place was well equipped, comfortable and private. Gorgeous views across the estuary. The outside seating area is sheltered and private and there is easy access to the walk ways. the walk down into Barnstable took about 30 mins and it was also easy to join main roads for visiting the general area. The Watchtower offers a unique opportunity to stay somewhere really special. It's ideal for a romantic stay with fantastic views in a very quiet location. The hosts were very friendly, warm, welcoming and helpful. The property has a wonderfully laid out first floor bedroom with a tv and seating area. Could not fault The Watchtower. Veiws and location were perfect. Particularly pleased that it's only a 10 minute walk to the Tarka Trail. We had a lovely walk to Instow then a bus back. The weather turned a little chilly while there, but plenty of heating in the Watchtower, so didn't take long to make it warm and cozy. We would love to go back. We spend a week in the Watch Tower. It is very tastefully restored and comfortable for 2 people. The top floors has 8 sides, 4 walls and 4 beautiful windows top to bottom, with wonderful views all around. Downstairs, the design has fully utilised the space with a fully equipped kitchen/dinner (both oven and microwave), and a modern shower and toileRead moret. Lovely place to stay in an ideal location overlooking the estuary. The Cedars Inn is just a short walk and does good food. A number of buses at the end of the lane take you to Westward Ho! and Appledore. The windows in the accommodation need attention and once sorted this will be an ideal place to watch visiting birdlife.

The Watchtower is quicky small and basic. Mr Patel greeted us on arrival. Milk, tea. coffee and sugar were provided. Location is between Barnstaple and Bideford with good pubs serving good food nearby.

The watchtower was absolutely amazing. Would definitely recommend a stay there .Saw deer on the grounds which was magical. Views were beautiful and had all you needed and more for a great stay. Lovely quiet peaceful and picturesque. Would recommend this property to walkers. Would not recommend to elderly people. Nowhere to relax indoors but has an outside area with seating. The views from this property are amazing. Beautiful on a nice sunny day.

'The Watch Tower' is such a unique holiday let, complimented by it's tranquil location. The access to the tower is by way of a single track lane, which we came to appreciate as a lovely way to return to 'our secret away from home' at the end our days out exploring the lovely coastal towns and countryside. We were given a very warm welcome to The Watchtower, which provided stunning views, gave the pleasure of being able to watch the deer on several evenings and was a very comfortable base for our visits each day to local places of interest.
