Full of charm and character, this traditional Grade II-listed Devon cottage dating back to circa 1650, has retained many of its original features and is the perfect retreat for small families looking to enjoy a holiday in the endearing village of Witheridge. Surrounded by rolling Mid Devon countryside, this delightful, thatched cottage provides a brilliant blend of relaxation and opportunity to enjoy the fresh Devon air. There are numerous walking and cycling routes close by including the renowned 180-mile-long Tarka Trail, which you can hop on at Eggesford only 12 miles away. Or enjoy days out at close-by market towns including South Molton (10 miles) and Tiverton (10.5 miles). Witheridge is situated on The Two Moors Way, linking the national parks of Exmoor to the north (15 miles) and Dartmoor to the south (27 miles).

The cottage has two welcoming entrance doorways. Upon entering through the left-hand entrance, you will initially come into the hallway where there is plenty of space to kick off those walking boots after a day exploring. To your left is the ground floor shower room complete with shower and WC, and to your right is the kitchen/diner. The kitchen is well equipped with a deluxe electric range oven set into the old inglenook, a microwave, American style fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. Here is also situated the dining table where you can enjoy home dining together, or better still make the most of the array of local pubs and restaurants in the area. Continuing into the lounge you can relax into the enticing sofas and watch your favourite films on the Smart TV in front of the realistic looking electric fire which has been converted from an old stove. The exposed beams and original features really add to the warming feel of your stay. From the lounge you can make your way upstairs where you will find the three bedrooms, two have double beds and ample storage space and the third has a single bed. The master bedroom has the added luxury of an en-suite bathroom, containing a rainfall shower over the bath and WC. In line with the originality of this cottage, it does feature some low ceilings and uneven surfaces which is something to be mindful of on your stay.

From the kitchen you can make your way out to the enclosed stone gravel courtyard, where you can indulge in the outdoor seating and enjoy leisurely meals and drinks. Free parking can be found on-street and in the village square, just a stones throw away.

We had a lovely stay at Black Dog Cottage. It's a quirky, characterful property that manages to be both cosy and comfortable, with everything we needed for a relaxing break. The cottage is well positioned for exploring Devon, making it easy to visit a variety of attractions, villages, and coastal areas without spending too much time on the road. Read more The cottage itself is full of charm and was clean, well maintained, and thoughtfully equipped. We particularly enjoyed the unique features and the peaceful setting. One piece of advice for future guests: make sure you read the booking conditions carefully. Because the cottage has a thatched roof, smoking is not permitted in the courtyard or anywhere around the property. We had smokers in our group and I hadn't fully read the small print before arriving, so that was entirely my oversight rather than an issue with the owners. It's an understandable safety requirement and worth being aware of before your stay. Overall, a wonderful cottage in a great location, and we would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and distinctive base from which to explore Devon. Hide

Fabulous cottage in a semi-rural location. Very well equipped, pretty and comfortable with lots of space for just the two of us. Highly recommended.

We have stayed in loads of cottages in this country and beyond, but none as full of character as Black Dog Cottage. It really is a beautiful place to stay - especially if, like us, you are planning on some walks on the Two Moors Way (which passes by the door). Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, with the warm welcome from Chris and Karen (and Jackie next Read moredoor) more than making up for any predictable shortfalls from the February weather. My recommendation is BOOK THIS PLACE NOW! You won't regret it! Hide

It was a lovely cottage and would recommend it to anyone. A really interesting quirky property steeped in history and well equipped, more so than the vast majority of places we have stayed. Very spacious. Is in central Devon, so can be used for North and South, a good drive to both but always a nice drive. Mind your head on the beams!
