  • Explore the Olchon Valley on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park
Property code: OC-86497

The Olchon Valley is situated on the Herefordshire/Welsh border within the Black Mountains on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It’s an area of special scientific interest, with a profusion of birds, plants and animals, some rare, along with no light pollution – it is a great place for stargazing. Here, you can leave the car behind and head into the Black Mountains, climb onto the Hatterrall Ridge to join the Offa’s Dyke Path where you can walk out to Hay Bluff and Twmpa, or enjoy the ruins of Llanthony Priory. There is also canoeing, pony trekking and climbing available within the park. Longtown, just 5 miles away is where you can discover a village shop and pub. For a more cultured day out, you can visit one of the many vibrant market towns including Hay-on-Wye, Abergavenny (both 15 Miles) and Crickhowell (21 Miles).

The cottage is accessed via a farm track leading into the enclosed gardens. Step inside to the old stone porch which is steeped in history and take a seat on one of the stone shelves where you can remove your boots; this is a great area to store your wood and outdoor kit too. Step into the heart of the home where there are many character features such as stone floors. The kitchen is traditional with bespoke wooden cupboards and shelving offering an electric oven and hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a table and chairs that’s perfect for breakfast and planning the day ahead. There is a change in level with stone steps into a small lobby where you can access the bathroom with a bath and WC. A further step gives access into the lounge/diner, a cosy space with large sofas that you can sink into and feel the warmth from the wood burner. Enjoy a film on the TV/DVD player in here before heading off to bed. There is a further change in level up to the dining area where you can enjoy a hearty meal around the large table and chairs. There is a great selection of books and games for guests to enjoy. The first floor is accessed via a set of steep cottage stairs; from the landing area, there is a bedroom room with garden views and a super king zip and link bed and another bedroom with a king bed that offers access to a twin room. There is also a small single room. To complete the accommodation on the first floor, there is a shower room with a shower and WC.

The cottage is surrounded by fields and mountains and has its own enclosed south-facing garden to sit in to admire the view. Wooden garden furniture, a parasol and a BBQ are provided (initial charcoal provided). If you bring your dog, please keep them under control as there are usually sheep around. There is ample parking.

Please note if the cot and highchair are required, this must be requested at time of booking.

The Firs is a favourite of ours, its remote location is beautiful, tucked away at the end of a stunning valley. The cottage has the right blend of traditional features and modern comfort. I will always recommend this holiday home, its an adventure every time we go. Nick

An idyllic, peaceful retreat for those seeking time away from the hustle of daily life. The scenery and sounds of nature were such a treat - the dog was in heaven roaming those hills! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Lovely cottage. Great if you want a place in the middle of nowhere with barely any signal. Just be aware of the low beams in this property and don't bang your head.

A fantastic country cottage, peaceful and quiet. Garden enclosed so dog can have freedom of running, stone floors are a bonus with dog as do not have to worry if floor becomes dirty just a quick mop unlike carpeted cottage.

This is a really lovely, secluded cottage. It was the perfect venue for our family Christmas. Plenty of space for four adults, two kids, and two dogs. Very comfortable and well-equipped, but be prepared to truly be out in the middle of nowhere (and with very little phone signal, for better or worse!). The nearest shop is about a 15-minute drive, anRead mored we definitely needed 4WD for the roads. But enjoyed every minute of our stay! Hide

The cottage is in a great location and we enjoyed our walks. We loved the the log buring fire, the birds and being able to sit outside in the sunshine. The shop in Longtown is a gem, we sat outside for coffee before going up to the house. All in all a great weekend.

Lovely farm cottage in a beautiful countryside setting, lovely comfortable and felt right at home, wanted for nothing. Road and narrow lanes are worth the drive to get to this stunning location ! Wildlife in abundance and our dog loved the garden and grounds to play in.
