An appealing, barn-style cottage, this charming retreat is the perfect place to get close to nature. Sleeping four guests, the two-bedroom, timber-clad hideaway nestles among fields and meadows on a farm. Just 0.5 miles from Cretingham with excellent pub serving home cooked food and with a cosy open fire. Make a picnic, pull on your walking boots and stride straight out along footpaths. Spend time in the ancient market town of Framlingham, 5.5 miles away, with its shops, eateries and 12th-century castle. Woodbridge, 9 miles away, is known for its array of boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Here you can also follow the Deben Estuary Coast Path or take a cruise on the river. Plan a trip to the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo, 10.5 miles away, where you can explore the famous Anglo-Saxon burial sites. Head 13 miles to vibrant Snape Maltings, with its renowned concert hall and independent shops. Spend a fun day in the traditional seaside towns of Aldeburgh (17.5 miles) and Southwold (25 miles).

Tear yourselves away from the verdant views and sound of birdsong to enter the cottage, which has the external appearance of a typical Suffolk black clapboard barn. Step into hallway, where you can unlace your walking boots or pull off your wellies, then turn right into the light-filled kitchen/diner. Slide the doors to the terrace open here on summer days to create seamless indoor/outdoor living. Prepare delicious home-cooked meals, then enjoy them together as you gaze out at the scenery. Also, downstairs are your family shower room and separate WC. A lovely super-king-size bedroom is also conveniently positioned at this level. This has zip-and-link beds that can also be made up as twins for flexible sleeping arrangements. Climb the stairs to the first floor to discover your splendid lounge. With floor-to-ceiling windows, this is a magnificent space in which to look out for wildlife in the meadow. There is also a comfortable king-size bedroom here which has field views.

Unwind out in the fresh air and sunshine at every opportunity. Read your book and enjoy a cup of tea as you survey your surroundings. Stroll across the meadow to the open pond. There is private, off-road parking for two cars.

We were in need of a short break, not too far away from home, but with a different feel. Poplar Farm Lodge promised peace and quiet and a chance to unwind. They delivered handsomely. After wending our way down a country lane, we were treated to a lodge with beautiful views and a break from the hubbub of everyday life. The lodge is clean, well appoiRead morented and comfortable. The kitchen diner has trifold doors that open out onto a spacious patio with loungers and a garden sofa set. We even had a few glimpses of sunshine which enabled us to sit out and enjoy the view and, of course, the perfect peace and tranquility. The upstairs lounge offered us the opportunity to enjoy the far reaching views and to watch the occasional wildlife that ventured nearby. The lodge was warm and comfortable and an absolute joy. There are plenty of well marked footpaths on your doorstep, so you can enjoy the countryside without having to get in your car, and The Cretingham Bell is a gentle 15 minute stroll away with great food and beer in a warm and friendly atmosphere. We would honestly go back to Poplar Farm Lodge in a heartbeat, our only regret was having to pack up and leave after such a short break. When the opportunity arises we shall be booking a return visit. Honestly, what's not to love ? Hide
